T& Are at the Browhrwood Mill A-
Elevator company yesterday afternoon
originated In the elevator heads on
the sorond floor and was caused &>'
friction. The damage done by the
blase was slight, but the damage don-
by water will probably bring the total
to $7«>0.. This loss was covered by in-
surance. As a
mill will be forced to shut down for
few days, but by the end of the week
will be running again
The Brownwood fire department de-
serves much praise for its efficient
work In extinguishing the biaz- so
promptly. The department made the
quickest possible run and there was
no delaV^at all In getting couplings
made. There were two streams play-
ing on the blaze within four minutes
after the sounding of the alarm and
one line of hose was carried to the
third story by ladders from the out-
side. After witnessing the work of
the local fire department, a well-
known business man was heard to re-
mark that “Brownwood has the best
fire department in Texas, nom> of the
cities barred,'* and It looked very
much like he was right about the mat- soon
ter if we are to Judge from their work
yesterday. 1 ! . \\y

THE ISSI'E—ALDRM'HISSI
AND CANNONINM.
William Kittle in Twentieth Cen-
tury Magazm. : What makes men
tn.MirK* nt(" at the pre*-nt time? Is
Nelson Aldrich the cause? Is Joseph
fun non the sufficient reason? Are
both together, by ability, a menace
to anything or an>;»o<ly? Let no one
for a moment believe that these two
men are the real Issue. Aldrich Is
not the issue. Cannon Is not the Is-
sue. Rut Aldrtchtsm and Cannonlsm
combined Is the issue. What la the
difference between Aldrich and Ald-
richtam, Cannon sad Cannonlsm?
Aldrich is the man of the dollar
without Imagination, without culture,
with a cerum hard quality of mind,
without sympathy for the masses, op-
posed by instinct to democracy and
drawn by association to the aristoc-
racy of wealth.
.nn"o is s coarse, profane and
somewhat grotesque old man. Hie
utter*n. -s are commonplaces when
not eallven-d by profanity. If ho
should attempt to perpetrate any
elequence his friends would laugh
When he quotes Scripture, as he often
does. Its incongruous application of-
fends by bordering on blasphemy. Ho
has spent n life time in the Stat >
where Abraham Lincoln lived, with-
out appreciating the man whose words
n-ar the close of transcendent public
aervice marked well the trend of that
life and character:“With malice to-
ward none, with charily for all, with
firmness In the right, ns Clod gives us
to see the right, let us istrlve on to
finish the work we are lm**
ancon loves hla parts because It
Is an organization for , place | and
power. Am on* hla fri-ads he would
waate no time In talking about the
principles back of the party. He would
probably aay: “What la the C institu-
tion between friends?** or. In the Inn-
guage of the New‘York politician in a
State convention. “If we arc not here
for the offices, what are we here fur?**
For four years at every turn, Cannon,
by hts political i*>wer on the com-
mittees and as Speaker in the applica-
tion of the rulea. opposed the progres- •
alve measures of President Roosevelt.
It was only when the “big stick" was
used sad public opinion aroused, that
the autocrat of the House and the
servitor of the “system" was forced
to yield. Even Ui n he used his
power to emasculate and vitiate such
measures, notably the rate bill and the
meat Inspection bill Cannon now de-
nounces La Follette and Cummins and
says; “If they call themselves Repub-
licans. then I am something else."
Thus his sense of humor Is one-sided
He is hostile to every man who has
had any part in the progressive move-
ment of the laot d-rade, and he ts In
sympathy with all the leading com-
binations of wealth that fatten by
special legislative privileges upon the>
masses of the people
