Nature's compensations
Nature seems to have some
compensations. Remember
last year's horrible drought?
Perhaps it is my imagination,
but it seems to me that Mother
Nature is trying to help things
bounce back by putting twice
the blooms, seed heads and
fruits on things!
Drive around and take a look
at hay meadows, at right of
ways and grassy areas. Have
you ever seen more wildflow-
ers? Have you ever seen more
abundant grass seed heads?
What about the wheat crops,
aren't they beautiful. Crops are
fairly leaping from the ground,
trees are setting on blooms and
fruits in wild abundance.
Hopefully, this will make up
for the scanty crop, dead trees
and shortages of last year.
It's amazing that nature can
do this. Even the birds, squir-
rels and rabbits seem to have
more babies than usual!
It is lush, beautiful, and so
comforting to know that for
every dead tree there is a seed-
ling growing to replace it For
every lost animal, there should
be a replacement.
On the same note, it seems
as if nature may be doing a
little over compensating with
her storms... we certainly seem
to be getting rain, and that's
good, but a few less tornados
and high winds wouldn't be
amiss!
Continuing on the nature
theme, I've always been a big
fan of hummingbirds. They
amaze me, that they can mi-
grate from Guatemala to the
U.S. as tiny as they are. Even
more than that, tell me how
they know who has feeders,
where they live and where that
food comes from? I was sitting
in my living room last Satur-
day when I began to hear a
persistent "chi, chi, chi" pen-
etrating my consciousness. I
looked up and there was a little
hummer, staring through the
door glass at me, chittering
loudly. I immediately took the
feeders out of the closet, filled
them with nectar and went out
on the porch to hang them. He
watched me do this, and hap-
pily began to feed. That's ab-
solutely amazing to me.
At any rate, Mother Nature
truly does know what she is
doing. I commend her on her
beauty, her talent, her lush
abundance. It's a beautiful
time of year, don't miss it by
staying inside!
