Father Jaillet's
story is inspiring
Alfredo E. Cardenas
Editor/Publishkr
Life for a missionary priest in
frontier Texas, namely in and
around Duval County, was hard.
People were strung out over long
distances in uncharted territory
inhabited by Indians, bandits and
rattlesnakes. The business of sav-
ing souls was not a task for the
weak. 7
Into this territory, in 1866, was
thrust a young, newly ordained
French priest. He came to San
Diego, without knowing a word of
Spanish or English. He quickly
built a church and began minister-
ing to Catholics throughout the
ranchos from Concepcion to
Pertronilla to Banquete.
His inspiring story is told in a
1948 book. Father Llauae Jaillet:
Saddlebag Priest of the Nueces,
written by Sister Mary Xavier
Hoi worthy. The book had long
been out of print until the Duval
County Historical Commission
reprinted late last year.
The Commission has done area
residents, especially history buffs,
a great service. Father Jaillet's story
is not only valuable to historians
but it can serve as an inspiration to
everyone who finds his life a chal-
lenge.
Little in today's world can
match the challenges faced by pio-
neers of a century ago. They faced
life without cars, electricity, tele-
phones, and many of the other

conveniences we take for granted.
They had little by way of money,
food, the bare essentials not to
mention luxuries.
What people had a lot of was
faith. From San Diego which had
the only church in the hinterland
between Corpus Christi and
Laredo and San Antonio and
Brownsville, Father Jaillet minis-
tered to the needs of Catholics in
the developing region.
His story is one of spiritual
renewal, physical endurance and
personal and community growth.
Father Jaillet, and this book, touch
many lives in many communities.
This book is an important work
on the history of this area. It is
essential reading for those who
wish to preserve this history. It
should be required reading in lo-
cal schools.
Father Claude Jaillet: Saddle-
bag Priest of the Nueces, is being
sold by the Duval County Histori-
cal Commission for $l 2. It can be
purchased at the Duval County
Museum or the Duval County Pic-
ture.
