Vaqueros upset
Bulldogs, share
district lead
The San Diego Vaqueros scored a major upset
on Friday, Oct. 24 when they defeated the Orange
Grove Bulldogs 34-14 at the Bulldogs' own field.
The win, coupled with a Bishop upset win over
George West, gave the Vaqueros a share of the
District 31-3A lead. The Badgers and San Diego
are both 2-0 in district play.
Playing without quarterback A1 Longoria who
was sidelined with a bruised kidney, the Vaqueros
relied on the running of Rene Salaiz to score the
win. Salaiz carried for 198 yards and four touch-
downs.
David Luera came in to fill in for Longoria and
scored a touchdown and ran for 42 yards. He also
completed three passes to Richard
Tanguma for 65 yards.
Coach Juan Hinojosa praised
Benito Alaniz and Jeffrey Buent-
ello for their play on the offensive
line. Also in for recognition were
defensive backs Oscar Saenz and
Luera. Each intercepted a pass.
Gilbert Cruz also turned in a praise-
worthy defensive effort.
The Vaqueros host Hebbron-
ville on Friday. Kickoff is 7:30
p.m. at Vaquero Field.

Vaqueros to a surprise 34-14 upset over Orange Grove.
This week's Sports Mania is
about the mighty San Diego Va-
queros as they rumbled over the
Orange Grove Bulldogs 34-14.
The Vaqueros gave the Bulldogs
their third straight loss.
District 31-3A is any ones title
to claim as the Vaqueros, Bishop
Badgers, and the Hebbronville
Longhorns surprised every one.
The Badgers took a amazing game
from the fifth state ranked team
the George West Longhorns who
lost 28-27.
The other Longhorns took a
big win over the Falfurrias Jerseys
33-7.
Now I will tell you about the
Vaquero-Bulldog game. The Va-
queros kicked off as the Bulldogs
received and went all the way to
the Vaqueros 10 yard line and then
scored a touchdown and took over
7-0. After another touchdown, they
led the Vaqueros 14-8 at the end of
the first quarter.
The Orange Grove fans went
crazy as if the game was over and
they won. The Vaqueros then tied
the Bulldogs at half time 14-14
then came roaring back to embar-
rass the Bulldogs at their home
stadium.
San Diego had played without
their QB Al Longoria who had a
bruised kidney. The star of the
game was Rene Salaiz who gained
198 yards and scored four touch-
downs against the Bulldogs and
has the most yardage in total of all
games, t
David l,uera scored the other
touchdown. Below are the 31-3A
standings.
The Vaqueros host the Heb-
bronville Longhorns next week.
