KINGSVILLE - Guadalupe
Rangel, the first Hispanic woman
to serve as a Texas A&M Univer-
sity System Regent, told 344 Texas
A&I University Graduates at
commencement on May 14 that
they must never assume any door
is closed to them.
"You must push on it," said the
Corpus Christi educator and civic
leader. “And you must not assume
that a door that was closed yester-
day is still closed today."
Rangel observed that we are
surrounded by a mediocrity grow-
ing from frustration and that
change is only the constant. “You
can direct that change,” she said,
“by indulging in a pattern of posi-
tive action, through positive
thoughts expressed in positive
language.”
Among the graduates were
several from Duval County. Listed
below, by community, are those
student from Duval County.

Positive response appreciated
Dear Editor,
Once again, I would like to thank the citizens of San Diego for their
positive response to our recent student activities. A little over a week
ago, many community members joined the students, teachers, and
administrators in a Walkathon from Alice to San Diego to help us raise
hinds for Senior scholarships. Much appreciation and thanks go out to
Duval and Jim Wells Counties’ Sheriff’s Departments and Roberson
Ambulance Service for following along the entire route.
Then just this past Friday, the community, . . . responded very
generously to make our annual senior “Grad Nite” a complete success
This alcohol-free, chemical-free event was attended by 70 seniois and
many parents/chaperones. Thanks again to all who donated food,
prizes, money, time and manpower. A special thanks to Sheriff Barrera
forprovidin* the security for the all-night party. Our Seniors surely
will leave with fond memories and many reasons to say thank you.
