GALVAN,
From Page 5
Galvan’s move from South to
Central Texas prompted his re-
search topic.
“I felt there was a difference
from South Texas where Hispan-
ics are a majority to Central Texas
where they are a true minority. “
Although he found that His-
panics in Central Texas are more
aculturated and fewer speak Span-
ish in the home, he also found that
a lower percentage participate in
higher education compared to
South Texas Hispanics. The other
difference he found is the teacher
expectation are higher in South
Texas. Galvan also, noted that
although South Texas Hispanics
have a higher participation rate,
that is still lower than it should be
because of th£lr dropout rate.
Galvan teaches Spanish in a
predominantly black inner city
school in Waco. He has previ-
ously served as director of applied
academics, atTexas State Techni-
cal College in Waco and also di-
rected off-campus programs for
Bee County College.
Galvan who retired as a senior
master sergeant from the Air Force
in 1980 after a 24-year career,
began his own higher education in
1975. Impending retirement made
him think about his future.
“1 wanted to get a bachelor’s
degree before I retired,” he said.
*‘I decided that without an educa-
tion my opportunities were lim-
ited.”
Galvan’s motivation has kept
him going to schol nights and
weekends non-stop ever since. He
has earned an associate’s degree
from San Bemadino Valley Col-
lege, a bachelor of science from
Southern Illinois University in
occupational education, a master
of arts from St. Mary’s University
in San Antonio in counseling and
a master of education in adult
education from Texas Add.
On May 14 he becamethe 87th
person to receive a doctorate in
bilingual education from Texas
A&I. The title of his dissertation
is “A Study of Factors That Influ-
ence Hispanics in Their Pursuit of
Higher Education in Central and
South Texas.”

The summer months are can-
cer awareness months. Young
people are especially urged to
protect themselves against skin
cancer. Following are some steps
that can be taken to avoid skin
cancer:
• The best way is to avoid the
sun.
• Cover up.
• Use a sunscreen lotion.
• Beware of cloudy days. You
can still get burned then.
• Be aware that the sun’s rays
can reach through three feet of
water.
Parents should instill in their
children these common-sense
rules. This summer, while chil-
dren are out of school and enjoy-
ing their vacations, is a good time
to practice these rules to avoid
skin cancer. Remember, says the
Cancer Society, “Fry now, pay
