El Campo To Host New Year's Eve Concert
On his way up, ha hit bot-

McBride was on hie way up
in the country music field
He was booked for shows all
across the nation.
His recording successes
number more than a dozen
single records on the na-
tional charts
McBride’s local TV talk
show appearances are
numerous He appeared in
Houston 10 times in one year.
He has also been featured on
“That Nashville Musk”,
with T.G. Sheppard and Con-
nie Smith. He appeared in
concert with Ronnie Milsap
and Barbara Mandrel!

vocative Broadway comedy.
The Fifth of Jniy. is featured
on the Arena Stage through
Jkn 9 Also on th Arana
Stage is The Prince and the
Paaper. a special adaptation
of Mark Twain's classic by
John Vraeke, which will con-
tinue to play throughout the
holidays
Both The Rivals and Fifth
of Jniy are scheduled at 8 pm
on Tuesdays and
Weekendsya, at ■ pm on
Thursdays and Fridays, at 4
and 8 pm on Saturdays, and
Lampasas, will be in El
Campo Friday, Dec. 31 for a
concert to be held in the
auditorium of First Bapist
Church
The concert, which is for
Wharton Countians of all
faiths, is being called, “New
Year’s Eve — s Christian
Alternative." The music
starts at 7:30 p m on New
Year’s Eve, and will con-
tinue until about 10 p.m.
The entertainment will be
followed by refreshments
and fellowship in the
church’s Fellowship Hall. It
is a free concert, but a love
offering will be accepted to
help organizers pay for ex-

tied, including champagne
served both before and after
the performance

Several local musicians
will open the concert at 7:30
p.m. The coordinator will be
Larry Pittman, musk direc-
tor at First Baptist, who may
lead the audience in a few
popular hymns.
Tommy Morton will sing
and play the piano to get
things started. He may be
joined by his brother Billy.
The Mortons have per-
formed in El Campo and in
the area with a Grand 01’
Opry type group which plays
for charity organizations
called the "Country Music-
Volunteers.”
Next on the program will
be Kim Hutchinson, a
talented El Campo High
School vocalist. She will be
followed by former Miss El
Campo and Miss South
Texas Shala Mills, who will
be joined by Houstonian
John Simons They are both
members of a Christian
choral group at Baylor
University called “Morning
Star.”
Richard Brown Curlee, an
accomplished professional
guitarist who works at Radio
Station KULP when he’s not
strumming, will end the first
session.
Curlee, who calls his brand
of music "country folk rock
blue grass science fiction,”
has performed with Chris-
tian comedian Mike Warnke
and the DeGarmo and Key
Band.
On the country and
western scene he has opened
for and played with Jerry
Jeff Walker, Michael Mur-
phy and Doug Kershaw.
McBride will close the con-
cert with songs and a show.
The concert is planned to
be a Christian alternative to
more traditional methods of
celebrating the new year.
