"We encourage teams
to come prepared to
complete the application,
as contestants will be
selected on a first-come
basis,” said Dan Gattis,
assistant general
manager of the Houston
Livestock Show and
Rodeo.
"By imposing strict
limitation on the contest,
the show is taking steps
to keep all the excitment
and flavor of this most
popular event, while
assuring spectators that

Livestock Show and

Gattis commented that
the contest had grown
from 17 teams and a few
hundred spectators in its
first year in 1973 to more
than 200 teams and
thousands of spectators
in 1982.
The show will sell
general admission tickets
to the contest at $5 per
person per day, with
13,000 tickets available
each day. "By controlling
the number of admissions
to the contest grounds,
we’re better able to
provide crowd safety and
still allow spectators to
see all the colorful
cooking teams
throughout the contest
area," said Gattis.

Contest is the northwest
corner of the Astrodome
parking lot. Check-in for
contestants is Friday,
Feb. 18, with cooking to
begin at noon on Satur-
day, Feb. 19. Judging
begins at 1:30 p.m. on
Sunday, Feb. 20 leading
to the selection of 12
finalists.
The World’s Champion
Barbeque Team will
receive its trophy at the
rodeo performance in the
Astrodome on Feb. 26.
Additional awards will be
given to the reserve
champion team, the most
colorful team or con-
testant and the most
unique pit.
"This is the 10th an-
niversary of the World’s
Championship Barbeque
Contest," Gattis noted,
"and we plan on
everyone having a good
time as we celebrate the
first decade of this
popular event. It’s the
highlight of the first
weekend of show ac-
tivities and we always
count on the enthusiasm
generated by the contest
to get Go Texan activities
and the show off to a fine
start.”

damental drilling and rig
mathematics and a
seminar on field handling

scheduled for the first
week in October by the
Petroleum Training
Institute at the
University of Houston
Victoria Campus
The 18-hour course on
drilling and rig
mathematics will be
offered from 7 to 10 p.m
on Tuesday, Oct. 5-Nov.
9, in room 101, the lower-
level of the Victoria
Collge--- UHVC library
Scott Kimbrough, Who
has degrees in
mechanical engineering
and personnel
management, will be the
instructor.
The use of the hand
calculator and its ap-
plication to daily com-
putations made on the rig
will be taught . The course
is intended primarily for
drilling contractors and
operator personnel who
desire a better un-
derstanding of rig
mathetmatics, Kim-
brough said.
Calculation in volume,
material, drilling,
cementing, kick, and trip
will be covered as well as
special problems.
A three-day seminar on
field handling of natural
gas will be conducted
Oct. 7 and 8, from 9 a m.
to 5 p.m. and on Oct. 9
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., In
room 21 of the UHVC
Annex, 4302 N. Ben
Wilson.
It is designed for lease
operators, field foremen,
production superin-
tendents and managers
Emphasis will be on
natural gas production
and handling on the
lease.
George Bagnall, in-
structor, will discuss
characteristics and
properties oi natural gas,
production, liquid
separation, hydrates,
dehydration of natural
gas, compressors and
prime movers and other
topics
