Charleston & Lake Creek News
By Vicki Vasco
The Lamer-Delta Retired
Teachers and School Employ-
ees Association met in the
Paris Junior College Ballroom
Monday, January 26. Reavis
Wortham, author and retired
teacher, was the guest speaker.
He talked about growing up in
the Chicota River Bottoms and
the books he has written about
it. It was a very good talk. We
had one of the largest crowds to
attend that meeting, 137.
Four residents’ birthdays were
celebrated at the Birchwood
Manor Nursing Home Wednes-
day. There were ice cream and
cake served to everyone who
attended.
Jalie Kay Swaim’s 8^ grade
basketball team from Chisum
played Cooper Thursday eve-
ning. It was really a good game.
Both teams did well. Heather
Murray was Cooper’s coach.
Chisum only has one game
left. It will be Thursday night
at Chisum. They will be play-
ing Deport. Dawson Hammer’s
Elementary team from Chisum
played Detroit Saturday. They
did well too.
Colin Ingram told at Church
Sunday that the Cooper Boys
Elementary Basketball team has
won their last three games. We
are proud of them.
The Cooper second grade stu-
dents visited the A & M-Com-
merce Planetarium Tuesday
of last week and then went to
the park. On their way back
to school, they stopped by the
Dairy Queen and had sweet
treats. They really had a good
time. Mrs. Leslie Young and
Mrs. Charlotte Rainey were
their teacher-sponsors.
Don’t forget the Ladies Con-
ference at the East Delta Baptist
Church next Friday and Satur-
day, Feb. 6 and 7.
The Pacio Baptist Church men
have been working on their new
fellowship hall. It is coming
along nicely.
The Charleston United
Methodist Church had a low
attendance Sunday. Several
people were ill. The flu is go-
ing around. Jennie Pickering
was the Worship Leader, and
Lynne Long was the Children’s
Leader. Ryan Thornton and
Colin Ingram were the Candle
Lighters, and we had several
little ushers.
There will be a baby shower
at the Methodist next Sunday
morning for Ainsley Worden,
Michael Worden’s new grand-
baby. It will be right after
Church.

Klondike News
By Patricia Blundell
Hey folks, as I am writing
this, it is 25 degrees outside. It
is Brrrr outside.
As we all read in last week’s
Cooper Review, Liz Hopkins
has retired from writing the
Klondike News due to health
issues. I know that, as I will,
most of you will miss her calls.
She always had a moment to
ask how we are doing and talk
with us.
I ask for every ones support
as I endeavor to write this col-
umn. If you have news and I
have not called you, please
feel free to call me at 903-366-
2059.
I am going to try to reach
out to the younger generation
who might like to use their
writing skills to do the Klon-
dike News. You get to meet a
lot of your neighbors by talk-
ing to them. I wifi gladly give
you a list of phone numbers
of neighbors to call and you
might want to add to this list.
Call either me or Editor Cindy
Roller, 903-395-2175.
Mike and Randy visited
Thursday in the home of Ger-
ald and Maggie Thomas. On
Friday Maggie and Gerald vis-
ited with Ron and Marilyn at
the Red Door Antiques. That
is a delightful place to visit.
Maggie, Gerald and a group
from New Life Baptist church
visited Birchwood Nursing
Home this past week. Kim
opened the visit with prayer.
Harold King requested prayer
for his brother, Carlton King,
who is in ICU in Paris. Please
keep Carlton in your prayers.
Carlton can usually be seen
on the Cooper Square and he
seems to always remember
everyone’s name. I am sure he
would enjoy a card from any-
one in Delta County.
Billy and Wanda hosted a
birthday lunch for Cody and
Amber at their home. Cody
turned 24 and Amber turned
20+ years of age. Amber
wanted hamburgers and Cody
wanted cheesecake.
Sarah Weatheread was just
crowned as the North Hopkins
Homecoming Queen. Sarah
who is called (Pebbles) is the
girlfriend of Houston Helms,
better known as Bam Bam. I
kind of like those nicknames.
Lisa, Kendra, and Taysia
attended the Winter Fest in
Arlington on Saturday. Good
time was had by all.
I talked to Nelma Dodd. She
was getting ready to watch the
Super Bowl. Nelma is staying
with her daughter in Canton.
She said she wifi be getting to
come home soon.
Did anyone watch the kitten
bowl? I did for a little while.
Those kittens were cute.
I, Patricia, went to Paris
Theater to watch the movie
‘American Sniper”. I really
enjoyed the movie. I did leave
the theater with a lot more
respect for what our military
goes through in those other
countries.
I took Jean Boles and Joyce
Toles with me on Saturday to
Paris. Our first stop was The
Coffee House, then shopping
at Wal-Mart and then to the
Sirloin Stockade.
As I was sitting on the couch
writing my news, I looked up
and outside the glass door on
the grass were several Cardi-
nals, male and female, and a
bunch of sparrows. I say one
little mountain finch. They
were eating in the pecan hulls
that I had thrown out. on the
grass by the porch. You know
there is always bit and pieces
of pecans left in the hulls and
the birds were really enjoying
their pecan treat.
How many of my Delta
County folks looked at those
wind formations in the sky on
Saturday. Eddie relayed the
message that they were called
Cirrus clouds. They were
so awesome, I stopped and
snapped a few pictures, and
posted them on Facebook.

Wesley and Terri made stuffed

some with bacon, feta cheese
and onions. I feel very blessed.
It is so wonderful to have the
boys at a point in their lives
that they are happy and able to
provide for themselves. What
else could I ask for as a parent?
My New Year’s resolution is
to enjoy the little blessings in
life.”
Chip and I started the new
year off with a visit to see
Larry and Dorothy Fitzger-
ald in Somerville. We enjoyed
visiting, eating, and attending
church with them. Chip and
Larry enjoyed beating Dorothy
and me at cards, but we know
that they just had all the luck!
It must have been another
quiet week in Tira. I hope to
