Think On These Things
By ESTHER BLACK KING
The Bible has always headed the list of best-selling books and because
more people prefer the majesty, rhythm and intangible quality of the
King James version, there is going to be a new King James Bible on the
market soon It is to be published in 1982
The 1611 “authorized” King James Bible has been quoted for centuries
in protestant cathedrals and churches but its language is so sprinkled
with thees and thous and obsolete words, it seems almost a different
language However, as we have seen, in some of the translations, it is
very difficult to revise the Bible without changing the meaning in some
instances
Thomas Nelson Inc., the world’s largest Bible publisher, with home in
Nashville, Tenn., is making the biggest publishing venture it has ever
undertaken It has just spent $3.5 million in its effort to update the 370
year old English in the world’s best selling book A team of scholars are
finishing seven years of sifting through the thees and thous of the archaic
ianguage to produce a Bible whose same meaning will remain intact.
The advertising director for Thomas Nelson is Ed Liden. Ed said, “We
don’t like the term ‘revised’ so we’re calling it the New King James It’s
not a translation; it’s not a paraphrase; it’s just a reworking and up-
dating of the original.” The 27 books of the New Testament have already
been published and a hard-cover edition of all 66 books of the protestant
Bible will be published and in the bookstores in August of 1982.
To show how the original meaning has been kept in the new edition, the
publishing house gave two examples. One being John 3:16 — For God so
loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever
believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." This verse is
the same in both editions except for one word: whosoever was changed to
whoever.
The other example was the 23rd Psalm which was practically the same
in both editions.
“May the good Lord watch between you and me (not thee and me)
while we are absent one from the other.”
