Ricehird Competition Tough—

Bohl, 300. are the other Chaparels
to boast .300 averages
Pitcher Dirk Tidwell, who won a
tournament game two years ago
as a freshmen, has a 13-2 record
with a 1.05 ERA
Westlake, who Boshong said
‘‘hits in spurts,” topped Belton 6-
3, 7-0 and Little Cypress, 3-2 (10
innings), 8 3 Johnson and Tidwell
had complete games in every
playoff outing with Tidwell

The Weatherford Kangeroos of
Coach Bill McGee started their
district slowly but came on strong
to earn their spot in the tour-
nament.
They are led by pitcher-center
fielder Scotty George who
registered a 7-4, 2.10 pitching
mark and a 453 batting average
Troy Holcolmb had a 10-2 record
with a 2.60 ERA for McGee.
Second baseman Tommy Pena
batted .341 while Bryce Doggett
batted .327 and designated hitter
David Kennemore .318.
“We almost didn’t make it,”
McGee said of his team’s slow
start in the district season.
‘‘We’ve gotten outstanding pit-
ching and clutch hitting and we’ve
been playing better and better.
“I feel confident about us,” he
added, ‘‘but there is not much I
can do about the quality of the
competition. All of these teams
are so good. We’re capable of
winning but Westlake is tough at
home and won state two years
ago, Estacado is outstanding and
El Campo has got to be real tough
to get this far.”
Or, as Campbell put it, “it all
boils down to going up there and
playing the game.”
The finals will also be held at
Disch-Falk and will start at 6 p m
Texarkana will face Houston
Sharpstown at 6 p m tomorrow in
AAAAA competition before San
Antonio Jefferson and Fort Worth

The Class A, AA and AAA
games will be played at Burger
Field With Wylie facing Crockett
in AAA play before Kennedy and
Midlothian clash The AAA finals
will be played at 2 p.m. Friday.
The AA champion will be
chosen from Riviera, Southlake
Carroll, Pottsboro or Pineland

game is set for 9 a m. Friday.
Mouthing Off: —
(Continued from Pg. 1-B)
fought their way through Bay Ci-
ty, Wharton and Friendswood all
had playoff quality pitching and
gave the Ricebirds their toughest
games thus far.
El Campo’s baseball success
marks the third consecutive boy’s
team sport in which a 14-AAAA
school reached the state tourna-
ment as Willowridge went to the
football finals and Bay City reach-
ed the basketball finals.
“Our district is real com-
petitive,” Campbell said. “We
needed to be ready every day and
every game.”
Other intangibles combined to
build a great baseball team that
seems to do whatever it takes to
win. The Ricebirds did not blow
out many teams this year (Bay Ci-
ty and Laredo United were excep-
tions) but they sure beat their
share.
They are the only remaining
AAAA team that did not win their
district last season. Campbell
said that they “deserve it” and
that they have “come a long
way.”
He is right They have come so
far that there is almost nowhere
left to go.
Almost.
Another El Campoan who has
made his mark on a state-wide
level is hunter-rancher-
photographer and now writer,
Grady Allen.
Grady, who seems to succeed at
whatever field he dabbles in,
recently conducted an exclusive
interview with deer poacher Ron-
nie Carroll. Grady’s interview
was printed in this month’s Texas
Sportsman magazine and makes
very interesting reading.
Carroll is proud of the talents
that made him the most wanted
deer poacher in South Texas.
Grady’s questions, no matter how
incriminating, are always
answered directly.
It is a fine story and I can
recommend it heartily.

Sam Boyer gave up on-
ly two hits and struck out
eight Indians to lead the
Lions to an 8-6 National
League win.
Troy Miller and Kevin
Repka had the only hits
off Boyer for the Indians
while the Lions smacked
seven hits off pitcher
Shayne Farrar.
Keith Strnadel and
Wade Graham both had
two hits for the Lions
while Brian Sebesta
added a double Rudy
Leal and William
Swanson had singles.
Cardinals 10 Giants 5
The Cardinals had
seven singles by seven
different players and
went on to top the Giants
10-5 in National league
action.
Chad Prihoda, David
Hanna, Randy Vacek,
Doug Hlavaty, Hiram
Sides, Dennis Kahanek
and Robert Premeaux
combined to down the
Giants who got two hits
for Ty Ganske and one
from Troy Broad and
Charles Manske.
Orioles 18 Lions 2
Keith Strnadel powered
a home run into a still
breeze for one of three
Lions’ hits but it was not
enough to top the Orioles
who ran away with an
18-2 win over the Lions.
William Swanson and
Robert Cruz had the
other Lions hits as Kenny
Rod fanned 11 Lions to
get the win.
' Mike Hogan led the
Orioles with a triple and
two singles while Jeff
Ritz had a double and two
singles Elias Martinez
doubled while Kenny
Rod, loanee Raun and
Tony Janke singled.
