Think On These Things
Think on These Things
By ESTHER BLACK KING
Encouragement. What would life be like without an encouraging word
or a congratulatory slap on the back? The id and the ego must be fed! Not
to make us prudish or arrogant but to boost our self-respect, so that we
may “love our neighbors as we love ourselves.’’
If you feel that you must give constructive criticism, make double-sure
that it is constructive and begin with a compliment and end with en-
couragement. This applies to men, women and children; whether
business associates, school personal, relatives afar, or the neighbors next
door.
Will Rodger said, “I never met a man I didn't like.’’ And none of us has
ever met a person that we couldn't find something nice or complimentary
to say and be truthful about it. When you talk to a person about his, or her,
good qualities, that person is apt to try and enlarge those attributes
Lets remember the three parts of constructive criticism:
1. True but not excessive compliments. Too much sounds insincere.
2. Constructive criticism Be brief and use a very kind voice.
3. Encouragement. All you can give A world full is not too much
Encouragement is spiritually healing for the person to whom it is ad
ministered. Sometimes a little encouragement is all it takes to make one
feel vibrantly alive.
Ruth Stafford Peale, in her book about Daily Living, wrote one chapter
titled, “How to Bend a Twig.” Her advice on rearing children is solid. She
put TIME first and encouragement second. “Most parents,” she said,
don’t give enough of their time and themselves to their children, and they
don't give them the encouragement they need
Adults need encouragement, too. Back between A.D. 46 and 120,
Plutarch was giving encouragement (to help avoid conflict) to the adult
population of his day when he said, “Perseverance is more prevailing
than violence; and many things which cannot be overcome when they are
together, yield themselves up when taken little by little." One wonders if
maybe Martin Luther King wasn’t a student of Plutarch.
The youth of this country are encouraged, at least publicly, by sponsors
and leaders of youth fairs, rodeos, fryer sales, animal shows, 4-H and
FFA, little league, and other sporting events, to keep them at their best.
But, do we, as good citizens, applaud and encourage these youth leaders
to keep them enjoying the work, and knowing that they are appreciated?
