Varsity Lady Mustangs
capture playoff spot
The Leon Taylor 7th grade Fil-
lies did themselves proud by
bouncing back from a 30-16 loss to
Mathis last Thursday to place
second in the Rockport Tourna-
ment Ingleside was the only 3A
school among the remaining 4A
competitors
Mathis used a strong press to
cause many turnovers The Fillies
had defeated Mathis twice pre-
viously this season and were sur-
prised by the Mathis team, Coach
Snipes said
“The Fillies came storming
back and showed great character
in defeating Rockport 36-25 on
Friday night,” Snipes said “Their
strong press was too much for
Rockport But they also pushed
the ball up the floor and were on
the offense before Rockport was
ready
“This same tactic proved to be
too much for Robstown also The
Fillies led 10-0 at the end of the
first quarter This was great de-
fense and a great press. We scored
off the press ”
The Fillies led 10-0 after the first
quarter, 11-1 at the half, 15-4 at
the end of the third quarter and
then hung on for a 19-4 win.
In the finals the Fillies were in a
seesaw battle with a good Flour
Bluff team with Ingleside losing
23-20 “Their coach reported that
they had only one last game,
however they were already dis-
trict winners,” Coach Snipes said.
“They had their hands full with
the Fillies The lead changed
hands throughout the game. Only
when the young Fillies had given
all they had did they get behind.”
