The Mustangs are back on the
victory road and they are back
with a vengence The Mustangs
exploded for their highest point
output this year in defeating the
Rockport l’irates in Rockport 35-
14 Shay Shugart and Ken White
combined for five touchdowns
and347 yards rushingastheMus-
tangs dominated the Pirates to
open district play with a solid win
Shugart capped the opening
drive of the night with a 12 yard
TD run The extra point was wide
to the left This drie consumed
over six minutes of the first quar-
ter. The Pirate offense made an
initial first down but then were
held and had to punt The Mus-
tangs then proeeded to drive the
length of the field again to take a
lead of 14-0 at the half
White dove over from the one
yard line to finish the drive that
saw the Mustang line completely
dominate the line of scrimmage.
Tackles James Hall, Roger Guer-
rero and Matt Pace controlled
their defensive counterparts and
were oping huge holes for their
running backs to go through
Nick Slaughcr lead a hungry
defense that stopped the Pirates
attempts to run and bothered the
quarterback when he tried to
pass Some of Rockport’s best
plays from scrimmage were when
the quarterback was flushed from
the pocket and had to scramble
for yardage
Even though the score was only
14-0 at half time, the tone of the
game settled, the Mustangs had
come to play. “This was the first
time the Mustangs started out of
the blocks and got better as the
game went on”, said Head Coach
Ken Shaver.
the intensity level was appa-
rent as the Pirates were driving
late in the fourth quarter for a
score The Mustang defense pride
was being challenged. Joe Padilla
and Robert Eppard stopped the
drive by corraling the quarter-
back and he was chased from the
backfield trying to make yardage
on a fourth and six at the Mus-
tang’s 14 yard line.
The Mustangs were scored on
in the third quarter as the Pirates
sandwiched two TD’s betweedn
the Mustang’s score to get within
14 points at 28-14. Coach Shaver
commented, “It looks like its
going to be a scoring fest" It was
for the Mustang offense as it had
scoring drives of 10, 11 and 15
plays. The offense had a total of
387 yards for the game.
The Mustang face another big
challenge this Friday at Mustang
field as they host the Sinton Pi-
rates on Parents Night Both
teams are 1-0 in district play and
this game could have playoff im-
plications.

IS yardline on downs as the Pi-
rate defense held on fourth and
