Advice offered on caring for plants
damaged during the rare snowfall
Now that the excitement of a White
Christmas is over, plant owners are discover-
ing to their dismay that they have brown
plants. Many tropical trees, shrubs and flow
ers are frostbitten with brown dried leaves, or
plants or part of plants may be mushy.
According to Master Gardener Ernie
Edmundson of the Aransas County Extension
Office, many calls are coming in requesting
advice for damaged plants. Edmundson says,
"If plants or plant parts that were firm or crisp
are now soft and jellylike, the plant should be
trimmed below the point where it is mushy. If
not, the affected area will rot, and that will
eventually spread to the rest of the plant."
It the plant has dried or brown leaves, her
best advice is to leave it until spring, that is, "if
you can stand the looks if it.” The dried area
will actually protect the rest of the plant in
case of additional freezing weather.
The average last frost in this area is usual-
ly mid February but there have been freezes
recorded as late as the first of April. After the
danger of trost is past, scratch the bark of
woody plants such as hibiscus to see at what
point the plant has any life left, and then trim
to that point. Trimming to the point of green
wood will encourage new growth, and that
may put the plant at more risk if the new
growth were also frostbitten. Some plants will
die to the ground, like the popular firebush,
but may come back from the root system.
To protect plants from freezing, the best
protection is blankets around and over the
plants, but they must be removed as soon as
the danger is past, as leaving them too long
may also damage the plant. A tent built over
the plant is also good protection, and the cov-
ering may be plastic as long as the plastic
itself does not come in contact with the
leaves. The plastic conducts tfie cold and will
actually enhance freezing if it is directly on
the plant.
The bottom line is. the White Christmas
produced frostbitten plants, and it will take
Spring to see if they recover.
