NEW YORK. July 7 -<D»S>—
You wouldn't suppose that a fat
little man Ilk* Al Well) would
blow bU top with the mereury so
high but In that case you don't
know Al Weill, matchmaker for the
New Ynrk or Madlann Square
Garden branch of the International
Boxing Club. Inc.
Al fairly alzzled today. And
all because somebody bed the
temerity to suggest that the Kz-
zaid Charles-ous t.esnevich "ti-
tle’’ fight he has arranged for
next month Isn't the fight of the
century.
"If 1 ton't get l.esnevlch. who
can I get?" He raged. "Name me
one."
Somebody suggested Joey Maxim
who get a recent duke over l.ea-
nevlch.
"Maxim'" Al -tereamed. ".Are
you Insane'1 He'd stink out the
Joint.
I thought that Wale or-charier
thing would have cured you guys.
Maxim- Phooey. He'* a spoiler.
Put nim In there with a careful
guy like Charles and everybody
goes to selep.
goes to sleep.
"Now you know I «*nevlch will
make Charles fight. »nd Uu* can
punch. Only time tie’s looked bad
was when he tried to make 175
pounds. That's how he blew the
duke to Maxim. Making weight
kills him. Hut at 181 or more
he’ll be strong and Charles will
have to go right along with him
or Jump out of the ring. And
Charles don't like to Jump, rhat'a
why you'll see a real fight and
maybe Gu* will beat him.”
The only way you can get any-
thing out of the smooth, sphinx-
like Weill la to get him enraged
and careless.
So while be was still boiling
we suggested that he wouldn't be
able to get another outdor* shot
this summer. He reacted Immedi-
ately.
1 "Think so?" He stormed.
"Shows Just how much you know
about It. I'm figuring on four
shows right here In these b* II
parks.
"I got this Lesnavich-charles
thing signed and I'm figuring on
another for August and two more
for September. There's one sure
already for September - Marcel
Cerdan and Jake Lametta for the
middleweight title.
"And that ain't all. Right now
I’m working on Wlllte Pep and
Sandy Saddler fnr the featherweight
title. And ain't that a natural’"
We agreed It was and hinted
that he’d never he aM* to make It.
“That's what you think," AI
snivted. "And If Ray Robinson
beats Kid oavllan in PRUly Monday
night, I'm sluing pretty with the
best fight and the biggest gat*
of the year.”
We guessed that hr meant Rocky
•ra/lano and Robinson.
"Right." said Al. "1 could do
at least $400.oon with that one."
And for the first time a big grtn
spread over hla fat face.
"But I got lots of other possi-
bilities," he continued. "There**
Rocky and oavllan If Oavllan bests 1
Robinson. There's maybe Ike
Williams and Enrique Holannn fnr
the lightweight title. There's
Rocky and Charley Eusar! and
Rocky and Mike Bellnlse. .
"Say. 1 got all kinds of good
fights In Igbt. It's Just a ques-
tion ,of getting the boys together
at the right time."
CINCINNATI. July 6-(INST•
