Submarine Travels 5,200 Miles
Under Water On 21-Day Voyage
HONOLULU, April 10 iUP* —
The U. S. Navy claimed a new
undersea record tixiay—a 21-day,
5.200-mile voyage under water
from Hong Kong to Honolulu by
the Snorkel type .submarine Ptek-
.______ Paul Schratz, of Pitts-
burgh. Pa, said the voyage was
comfortable and routine But a
Navy spokesman in Washington
was more excited
The Washington officer said it
was “by far” the longest distance
over traveled by an American sub-
marine under water and "to the
best of our information the long-
est underwater distance ever trav-
eled by any submarine."
The Pickerel is a new 1,MO-ton
vessel, commissioned only last
year. It left Hong Kong March 15
and arrived hero last Wednesday.
Schratx. 34. an Anapolis gradu-
ate and a veteran of the Pacific
war. thought up the idea of the
rec*grd trip and talked the Navy
into letting him do it.
Schratz said he studied the the-
ory of submerged navigation dur-
ing the war. in which he made
eight submarine patrols. When the
Pickerel was ordered back to Pearl
Harbor from Hong K'.i.u h< isked
for an received permission to test
his navigational theories.
During the voyage the Piekeral
was kept on course by Loran, a
radio navigational aid used by
ships and planes The sub passed

Sen. Sparkman 'D.,-Ala.', said
that "as a practical matter" ex-
tension of the present control lav*
