Although the audiences fre-
quently bad trouble catching the
sense of some of the topical
or local allusions and even
more often were quite baffled by
some of the "peculiar gstggt
customs," all these pictures
played to much better houses
than did the local films.
Cantlnfias, the rigged Mexican
: >n.edian. can always draw a good
crowd. And Marts Felix, considered
one of Mexico's greatest beauties,
is generally good for s two-week
run. But aside from these. Mexican
films tend to fall into a pattern of
either crime and violence of
sticky sentimentality.
Add to this the fact that they
are not too technically excellent
and that their scripts are seldom
of top quality and the reason for
the non-patronage of Mexican
Dims is apparent.
It in hoped that, through the
work of the committee, better
stories, better filming and greater
technical excellence can be
ieveloped so a demand can be
created for local films. Central
America ia a natural market for
these pictures, if they can meet
the standard* of the U. S. product
the Spanish language will almost
-ensure their success.
