Forgotten Taxpayer
11 there in any one type of taxpayer who
*l«>enes the title of “the forgotten man." it
jh the Anierteaii motorist. Certainly he is tin
natiui a No. 1 tax victim. No matter who el. e
telief. the motoriat never does. Ami
whenever it becomes necessary to levy new
taxes, he always yets soaked first.
I'he Automobile Manufacturers Associa-
tion is seek my a hearing before the House
Ways and Means Committee in behalf of the
motorist, who is taxed $1.3 billion annually
in Federal excise taxes alone, in addition to
billions in state ami local taxes.
"The motorist is nearly iorge, tten in tax-
ation discussions in Washington today,"
William ,J. Cronin, AMAs managing direct-
or, said.
"When Congress im|ioscd automotive Fed-
eral excise taxes eighteen years age* it pro-
mised they would be ‘teni|»orar\’ to meet de-
pression needs. Instead ol removing the tax.
Congress doubled it in 1!M1 to discourage
wartime use of motor vehicles. fc)\ery nn.tor-
ist remains a victim of this discriminatory,
unfair and burdensome tax."
The motoriat who buys a new ear pay s 7
l*‘r cent in Federal excise taxes on the manu-
facturer's list price, wmch adds about $!>:»
to the average car cost. The truck buyer
must |*ay 5 per cent, l'arts needed to repair
cars are taxed 5 per cent, Gasoline and ml.
tires and tubes also bear the special excises,
the AM A managing director (minted out.
Whether the effort of the AM A to obtain
relief for the overtaxed motorist will mii
ceed. remains to la* seen. Probably it will
not. The motorist is the victim of every new
tax drive because he is the easiest person
to get to. and because he has no reeivurse.
While others kick against taxes, the motor-
ist pays and pays. There is nothing he can
do about it.
The Abundant Life
Back during the days of the New Ileal, tin
economic prophets talked a great deal ,<>•• ->it
providing all the (ample with the Ahuinlnnt
Life. Dr. Kcxford Tup w ell, chief < on em-
inent planner, was one of the most vocilci-
ous of the h-y m advocating this abundant
existence. He believed it could be at nun
plished by the Government a uimg every
l>erson a high standard of living, ii'ropci five
ol bow much effort the individual i ut forth
to obtain it.
New comes Dr. Harold 1$. Moulton, pic i-
• < nt of Brookings Foundation, to proclaim
that «ut\ |a*r on m America can achieve
the Abundant Life in the next few year* if
the services of science are utilized property.
In tact, Dr, Moulton foresees a veritable
topia by the beginning *i' the next century,
in which every American will enjoy a stan-
dard ot living far beyond anything he could
remotely visualize today.
\\ riitt is this Abundant Life tin1 scientists
abd economic prophets are so fond of pre-
dicting?
h Turn reading their descriptie,ns, one
would gather that it isofu plethora of phys-
ical comforts. The Abundant Lite, they tell
us. is one in which every person will have all
Ills pliysit al wants tultilled. When cvci\
Arnerean is able to own a home, an untoimv-
bile. a radio, perhaps a television set. with
all the other gadgets that go to make lite
easy and work uniieiessary, we . hall have
achieved the Abundant Life, aay the eco-
nomic dreamers.
I his i;> tar different from the Good Life
deacrilied by Plato, which was a life devoted
to the contemplation of the True, the Beau-
tiful, and the Good.
And it certainly is a far cry front the *
Abundant Lit* d< »cnbed in Holy Writ, which
wa a life of erv ice to God and man. File
modem economic measians have done a dis-
ervm to tin term, it seems to us. in linking
it with material riches, for life, according to
tin ScTipiures, “eonsisteth not m th* abuii
dance •,( ibings which a man possessetb."
1s t us not forget that the < bie who pro.
