were -found guilty by the juries before
whom they were tiled. Both have receiv-

Mr. Muiey, nmisclf a college professor,
wonders it the type of education Hiss and
Vliss (oplon received was not responsilvl.

to their betrayal of their country. He
l*»inta out that lavth were highly educated,
tmth held responsible positions with the

There was nut the slightest reasmi for
either of them lieing attracted to Comniun-
ism, which was opposed to the system
which had made their success isissible.
Neither of them cherished any personal
grievance against the Government, sn far
as is known. Vet both turned against the
country of their birth and gave aid and

"What moral verdict can be drawn
Horn these strange cases?” asks Mr. Alotey.
"Is there too much cynicism being
taught in our colleges? Are those wh >

Veterans In Business

chose to enter business on their own rath-

•he til’s seemed to feel that there was no
future in working for the tvther fellow and
preferred to take the risk of going into
business, even on a small scale, rather than
begin the slow climb toward advancement
offered by jobs in industry.
When these veterans elected to invest
their severance pay in small enterprises
rather than in some form of stable .securi-
ties. many financial leaders shook their
heads. They |>ointcd out that more than
two-thinls of all new enterprises tail be-
fore the end of their second year of o|mt-
atieji. and they predicted that these ambi-
tious Gl*a would soon he knocking at the
doors of employment offices, seeking jobs.
But such has not been the case. A re-
cent Government report showed that the
percentage of failures on the part of these
(il entrepreneurs since Y\J Day has been
only «>ne out of twelve. The percentage
of failures in businesses not operated by
veterans lias Ihm-ii much higher—one out
«f three.
