Planning on initialing pledges some time soon?
Across town on the 1 1 ill one of the social clubs initiated
pledges last week and received national publicity from it.
Naturally everyone likes to receive national publicity but not
the adverse type received by the Abilene Christian pledges'
picture all covered with red paint molasses and half-frozen.
It is not this purpose to condemn or criticize the ACC social
club for all club initiations be it at ACC or McMurry do
occasionally take an extreme turn such as that. Tt is this pur-
pose however to give a fair warning to McMurry socialites and
use the Hilltoppers as an example of what could happen.
The final result of the social club pledges' receiving national
publicity is not known. It is assumed however that a suspen-
sion is in line for both club and individual members. Social
clubs play a main role in college activities. It would be a certain
disadvantage and bring unhapniness to many if such suspen-
sion were to occur at McMurry
In assembly Monday Dean McDaniel issued a statement
to clubs reminding them of the rule which prohibited pledges
wearing any apparel or carrying any item which would disturb
classes. An unwritten rule exists concerning initiations also.
Social clubs do have a tendency to go overboard every once
in a while on a matter of initiations. And when they go over-
board inevitably something like the ACC pledge incident hap-
pens. It should he enough warning to clubs now to stop and
think before going off on a tangent.
Planning on initiating pledges any time soon? Be careful
"socialites" your picture may end up on the front page of the
Abilene paper and scattered throughout dailies all over the
country.

"loot's elect class officers."
Council election is finished and it's time to start the ball
rolling around the ballot box again for class officers.
The plan to elect class officers by secret ballot on a regular
"class election day" was instigated last year for the purpose
of arousing more interest in class elections and to give students
more time to investigate capabilities of officers.
It was something new last year and a great deal of favor-
able interest was revealed by the number voting.
It's old stuff this year but nevertheless it should attract
an equal or surpassing number of voters to the polls.
Before poll-time though there's a matter of petitions
signed by 20 bona fide members of that particular class and
checked for a C average.
The Student Council installed the plan after the entire
student body passed the amendment. They expect response.
It is to the advantage of a class to show interest in these
elections.
Not merely by voting but by submitting petitions also. To
make the political race a lively one.
It could be a very dull affair with no interest energy or
time expended.
Or it could be a definitely enthusiastic event with everyone
participating.
It's class election time again let's get the ball rolling!

the Band makes two yearly tours

But still you hear students gripe
because they don't get to make
convention trips. Believe it or not
there's a convention trip in your
future If you play it right!
First the idea Is to select at
least one activity on the campus
which jou would like to np a
participant of. Protc your dili-
gence Interest and sincere en-
thusiasm. When convention time
rolls around your name will bo
among those included!
There's a convention trip for
everyone but like we say you've
got to find your college activity
first and put forth a little concen-
trated effort If you're not a senior
might start looking around could
be next spring you too will have
a reward through some activity
and like the Press club . . .
Take a convention trip!

LETTER TO EDITOR
Dear Editor:
I have a comment to make and
considering that heretofore noth-
ing has been published in the War
Whoop on this subject I should
like to offer my two-bits!
The American people are hero-
crazy. The late P.D.R. was a na-
tional hero and the people could
expend their cheer on him. Today
MacArthur is- that hero. Besides
he's the underdog and the Ameri-
cans always champion the under-
dog. The right or wrong of the issue
and Truman's stand is debatable.
And if you don't believe it's debat-
able you have been In a history
or government class the past
weeks.
It wouldn't be necessary to have
.ill this tuckus confusion and con-
troversy though if the Americans
weren't a hero-crazy bunch. It
seems Inevitable that they must
champion someone and right now
that man Is General Douglas Mac-
Arthur! Sincerely
Emily Ledbetter.
