presented Wednesday and di-
vorce refused.
While serving on the jury in
the Whitley awe, Wednesday,
William Wentland of. Shiner re-
ceived the sad news of the death
vuf his father-in-law, Louis Koen-
ig, whfbh occurred at the latter's
home in Fayette county. The de-
ceased was the father of Mrs.
Fritz Berckenhof? of this city,
and the telegram bearing the sad
news was received by Mrs.
Rerckenhoff. Mrs. Berckenhoff
left immediately
for Shiner,
where she was joined by Mrs.
Wentland and another sister who
resides there, and the three pro-
ceeded to Round-Top, where
theirvfather resided, to pay their
last respects to an honored sire.
Kansas City capitalists have
bought lands in Pecos, Brewster
and Jeff Davis counties and will
begin at once the construction of
a dam by means of which 23,000
acres of land may be converted
into a lake for irrigation pur-
poses.

George narrell and James Me-
Henry, the two negroes >fho
have been in jail for Several
months on a charge of burglar v,
the oftepse having been commit-
ted at Yookum, came before the
court Mond^ morning, entered
pleas of guilty, and were given
two years each in the peniten-
tiary.
Julius Cardenas, charged with
burglarizing a private residence,
essayed to fight his case, and the
, jury found him guilty and as-
sessed his punishment at ten
years in the penitentiary.
The case of Will Whitley,
charged with theft from person,
consumed the greater part of
Tuesday and Wednesday. The
jury returned a verdict of not
guilty.
John Corley, a white boy
brought here from Yoakum on a
charge of burglary, was on trial
yesterday. Corley was arrested
in San Antonio and in being re-
turned to Yoakum jumped from
the train, tut was soon recap-
tured. A verdict of not guilty
was returned just before our
press iime yesterday.
The case of state vs. Tom
Adams, charged, with murder,
was continued, as was the case
of Fred Evans, who as charged
with seduction.
The case of George Washing-
ton* alias George Foley, charged
with the murder of Frank Ku-
beana, was set for Monday, No-
vember 6. Judge Green appoint-
ed Chas. Fertseh and Henry S.
faulus as counsel to represent
ijtie defense. The grand jury al-
so found, bills of indictment
against this defendant .charging
him with robbery and with as-
sault to murder, the latter
charge growing out of an affray
in the county jail last week,
when Foley assaulted a fellow
prisoner.
The case of F. T. Pinter,
charged with forgery, was con-
tinued by agreement
