I believe that the vo-
ters are confronted with
the most important vote
probably tney have ever
cast in Texas. On Nov.
6, 1973, we vote on nine
constitutional amend-
ments. Every voter
should give careful at-
tention to how they vote.
I would like to dis-
cuss Amendment No. 1,
which pertains to in-
creased pay for the leg-
islature and for the
annual meeting of tnc
Senate and House that
this Constutution per-
mits them to have.
Since I have read
recently in the paper
of a story out of Aus-
tin that the Lobbyists
say, “Pay increase will
improve legislature, “I
believe that it is time
for us to take a ser-
ious look because I'm
thinking that you are
thinking as I do that
we should not allow the
Lobbyists to dictate our
voting. They have too
much influence now.
Let’s analyze what
this salary raise means.
House members are e-
lected for two-year
terms or 730 days. The
new amendment would
direct them to work 240
days out of the two years
at a salary of $15,000
per year or $30,000 for
their term for 240 days
work. Do you think they
are woth it? Their a-
verage pay per working
day would be $143.00.
Do you think they are
worth it? But this is
not all. They can vote
them-selves an expense
account which the have
liberallv done in the
themselves an expense
account which they have
as high as 2,400.00 per
month. Do you think they
are worth it? This is
just a little bit on the
salary.
Their annual meeting
does more than just
meet. It requires the
state comptroller to
make an annual report
to them for the antic-
pated income and pos-
sible expenditures.
Since statehood, they
have made a bi-annual
estimate, but now they
say every year,
find a place where they
can spend some more
of the taxpayer’s money.
This wouldn’t only affect
every county and city to
keep up with their
changes, and I believe
you can as anybody that
the most harassing time
we have is when they
are in session.
Now then, we want to
say, if you will think
back when your repre-
Senators got 10.00 a day
for 120 days for a two-
year time, don’t you
think he rendered as
sufficient a service as
any man since that day,
and their salaries have
we have today? Don’t
you think Judge King
of Throckmorton County
did render as a great
a service as any man
since that day, and their
salaries have been in-
creased. Did it increase
the efficiency? I say no.
Do you think that the
Lobbyists should say
what is best for the
voters to vote for this
amendment? They have
a lot of influence any-
how, but don’t let them
influence you on this
vote. Let’s vote no on
this. It’s No.l on the
ballot.
If this increase comes
along, they won’t have
to trade their stamps
for Ford pick-ups. They
can drive Cadillacs.

P.S. We’ve got too many
laws already. We need
to wait from four to
six years before we pass
any more.
