The Grateful Heart
sins as far away from us as the
east is from the west. He will
remember our sins no more,
but instead he surrounds us
with loving kindness and
tender mercy, and these are
from everlasting to everlasting
to those who love him and are
faithful and obey him.
What joy it is to have this
peace that David surely
experienced as he penned these
beautiful thanksgiving Psalms.
For a closing word I can
think of no lovelier
benediction than Psalm 106:1,
“Praise ye the Lord. 0 give
thanks unto the Lord; for he is
good; for his mercy endureth
forever.”
David also says, “He heals
me.” Now, we are not told that
David was physically sick, but
we do know he was “sin sick.”
And God had healed him.
There are diseases of men
where fever is induced to burn
out the malady. Though one’s
fever may be unto death it will
not burn out the malady of sin.
One can join the church, be
baptized, feed the poor, or by
all manner of medical
preparations but remember,
David said, “God healed me.”
Notice also that David gave
thanks unto God, because God
had ransomed him from hell.
Every sinner deserves the
punishment of hell. Were it not
for the love of God, hell would
be the destiny of us all. David
gave thanks because hell held
no horror for him. God had
ransomed him, and God is
merciful and tender toward
those who don’t deserve it.
God never bears a grudge,
does not remain angry. He is
like a father to us, tender and
sympathetic to those who
revere him. He removes our
giving thanks? Because every
good and every perfect gift is
from above and cometh down
from the Father of light. Our
temporal benefits, our daily
provisions, His unfailing
guidance, our hopes and
assurances are all from God.
In what ways can we
express our thanksgiving to the
giver of these blessings?
Worship, prayer, offerings and
praise are evident in the lives of
those who ring the
thanksgiving chimes.
David said, “He forgave all
my sins.” Can you comprehend
the enormity of that
statement? Every sin is
forgiven. Stop for a moment
and take a deep look into your
own life. Is it marred by sin?
David’s sin was covetousness
but God forgave him. He was
an adulterer, but God forgave
him. The blood of Uriah was
upon his hands but God
forgave him. It is impossible to
know the multitude of David’s
sins, but we do know when he
asked God to forgive him, God
forgave ALL his sins.
Bless the Lord, 0 my soul;
and all that is within me, bless
his holy name. Psalm 103:1.
Frederick F. Shannon,
dealing with this passage,
portrayed the Bible as a great
steeple set with thankgiving
chimes. The variations of the
tune are many, the spirit, the
tune itself is one. The psalmist
harkened to the tune of these
bells and resounded in praise to
God.
To whom shall our
thanksgiving be offered? Unto
God, our heavenly Father. But,
through whom shall we make
it? Through Jesus Christ our
Lord.
