Chicago.—Henry Johns, a bartender
at 634 South State street, is of the
charitable sort, so he readily complied
when a burly Individual entered his
place of business the other night and
demanded a drink. \
He wasn't much concerned even
when the thankless patrons asked for
and consumed another without pro-
ducing any money. But his astonish-
ment grew when the fellow asked him
to give him half a dollar.
“I can’t give you a naif,” said
Johns.
“Oh, yes, you can,” came the an-

acquiesced. The man pocketed the half
and said:
“Guess you'd better give another.”
Johns agreed. The burly solicitor
repeated his demand for coins of the
half-dollar denomination until Johns’
hands were weary with punching the
cash register and the till was empty
of coins. A stranger strolled in.
“Have a drink, stranger,” said the
man.
"Don’t care for any,” was the de-

“Oh, yes, you do,” and the man
went through the performance of ex-

“I’ll take a beer,” said the stranger.
The armed man became affalile. He

A few moments later Patrolman J.

was shaking hands with Johns again,

Hooper, Nebraska.— “I am very glad
to tell how Lydia E.Pinkham’s Vegetable
Compound has helped me. For five years
I suffered from female troubles so I was
scarcely able to do my work. I took doc-
tors’ medicines and used local treatments
but was not helped. I had such awful
bearing down pains and my back was so
weak I could hardly walk and could not
ride. I often had to sit up nights to sleep
and my friends thought I could not live
long. At my request my husband got
me a bottle of Lydia E. Pinkham’s Veg-
etable Compound and I commenced to
take it. By the time I had taken the
seventh bottle my health had returned
and I began doing my washing and was a
well woman. Atone time for three weeks
I did all the work for eighteen boarders
with no signs of my old trouble return-
ing. Many have taken your medicine
after seeing what it did for me. I would
not take $1000 and be where I was. You
have my permission to use my name if
it will aid anyone."—Mrs. Susie Tem-
pleton, Hooper, Nebraska.
ThePinkham record is a proud and peer-
less one. It is a record of constant vic-
tory over the obstinate ills of woman—ills
that deal out despair.
It is an established
fact that Lydia E.
Pinkham’s Vegeta-
ble Compound has re-
stored health to thou-
sands of such suffer-
ing women. Why
don’t you try it if you

“Can you tell me,” remarked a fair

“who that exceedingly ugly man is?

The gentleman s*ii!ec sarigmicaliy.
“Oh, he’s my brother!” came the
reply.
The lady went scarlet, and her con-
fusion was almost painful.
"Oh, I’m so sorry!" she stuttered,
apologizing profusely. "You see, I did
not notice the resemblance between
you.”
A moment later she turned to her
neighbor on her left, who happened to
be a woman.
“Do you see that handsome fellow
over there, twisting his mustache?"
she asked. “He's been watching me,
and making eyes at me ad the evening.
Who is he?”
The other woman turned scornfully
and angrily upon her.
“Oh. he’s only my husband 1” came
the biting reply.
Little Study In Relative Value.
On the 2d of June Edward Albert,
prince of Wales, was 18 years of age.
That means that he was old enough
to rule the British- empire if his fa-
ther were to die.
But he won’t be “of age” wdth all
which that implies in English law un-
til he is 21.
And he will not be free to choose a
\fiie until he is 25.
An odd logic this—with 18 goes the
rule of an empire; with 21 the power
to incur debts, and with 25 the right
to chose a wife.
This would make an anthropocen-
tric wTorld laugh in appreciation.—Chi-
cago Post.
