PREMONT - The Freer
Buckaroos captured their second
district championship in as many
years on Friday, Nov. 8, when
they blew out the district's num-
ber two team the Premont Cow-
boys, 54-13.
The Buck's host District 32-
3A runner-up Port Isabel on Fri-
day at 8:00 p.m. The valley teams
bring a 4-1 district, 7-3 overall
record into the game.
Freer spotted the Cowboys all
13 points before turning on its
offensive machine.
Bill Cherry opened the scor-
ing for the home team on a one
yard run. The PAT kick failed
and the Cowboys enjoyed a 6-0
lead. They padded their lead on
another Cherry TD, this one on a
13 yard pass from Mike Perez.
Jose Chapa kicked the PAT giv-
ing Premont a surprising 13-0 first
quarter lead.
That would be the Cowboys
only moment in the limelight.
Adrian Hassete started the Freer
assault when he broke lose for a
48 yard touchdown run. Bass
Blundell ran for a two-point con-
version.
Blundell gave Freer the lead
for good when he scored again on
a five yard run. The PAT failed
and the Bucks went into the half
with a scant one point lead.
Fred Riojas, who rushed for
269 yards for the evening, scored
touchdowns of four and 26 yards
to open the third quarter scoring.
Anthony Lopez widened the lead
when he took in a nine yard TD
pass from Blundell. J. T. Ray
made good on only one of three
third quarter PAT tries.
Freer's lead continued to
mount when Ruben Esparza
grabbed an eight yard Blundell
pass in the end zone to open the
fourth quarter. Hassete repeated
the feat moments later and Ray
wound-up the scoring on a 35-
yard scamper. Ruben Aguillon
made all three fourth quarter
PATs.
The Freer defense stiffened
after the first quarter and allowed
Premont only 44 yards rushing
and 90 yards passing.
The Bucks end regular season
play with a 5-0 district mark and
an overall record of 8-2.

Eagles end season
on winning note
RIVIERA - The Benavides
Eagles took advantage of four
Riviera turnovers to record a
season ending win 21-20. The
local Seahawks, who outran and
outpassed the Eagles, missed
tying the game on a failed PAT
try.
Roland Carrillo, who scored
all three Benavides touchdowns,
opened the scoring with a 10 yard
run in the first quarter.
Ruben Gamez made the PAT
to give the Eagles an early 7-0
lead.
Riviera came right back when
Amie Jimenez outran Eagle de-
fenders on a 70 yard TD. The kick
for the PAT failed. .
Carrillo scored again in the
second quarter from eight yards
out. Gamez' kick was good mak-
ing the score 14-6.
The Seahawks tied the score
before the half on'a 7-yard TD
pass from Frank Croghan to
Charlie Guerra. Jonathan Wilk-
inson ran in a two point PAT.
After a scoreless third quarter,
Benavides regained the lead on
another Carrillo touchdown cov-
ering 10 yards. Gamez again made
good the PAT.
Riviera made another try at
evening the score when Mike
Bruce took in a 40 yard pass from
Croghan. The PAT kick failed*
and Benavides won-out at 21 -20.

with a 4-5 record.

A new area code - 210 - will
serve San Antonio area and Rio
Grande Valley area telephone
customers beginning Nov. 1992,
according to Jeff Jung, area
manager for Southwestern Bell
Telephone.
All communities in the San
Antonio and Brownsville service
areas will change from the cur-
rent 512 area code to the new 210
area code at that time. This in-
cludes communities served by
Southwestern Bell Telephone and
other telephone companies.
Austin and Corpus Christi tele-
phone service areas will retain
the 512 area code.
The changovcr will take place
in two stages. For a six-month
period-Nov. 1,1992until May 2,
1993 - customers who accidently
dial the 512 area code to reach
telephone numbers in the 210 code
will still have their calls auto-
matically switched to the 210
number.
"This six months will give
callers more time to become ad-
justed to the new area code," Jung
said. "For a few weeks after the
adjustment period ends, callers
still using 512 when dialing
numbers in the 210 area code wifi
hear a recorded message instruct-
ing them to dial the new code.
"Before the conversion takes
place, we will provide informa-
tion to all of our customers."
Jung said the new area code is
being established now "or we will
run out of telephone numbers in
the near future.
"Population growth and the
rapid development of new tele-
communications services are the
main reasons the telephone num-
ber supply is being exhausted."
Jung said that announcing the
change this early gives telephone
customers more than a year to
plan for their stationary, business
cards and other printed materials,
to reprogram telephone systems
and other devices and to inform
friends and relatives.
He said no change other than
the customer's area code will
occur. The customer’s seven-digit
telephone nurhber will remain die
same, as will long distance rates
and dialing methods.
