Dear Harl:
Thank you for calling me recently asking how the
WASP felt about changing the area near the roadside
historic marker located adjacent to your property
off 1-20. Harl, I've always liked the simple marker
with the cactus and natural Texas plantings sur-
rounding it.
But, I do acknowledge your suggestion, as a good
one, that an additional marker could be placed
nearby, telling visitors that up that road at TSTC
there exists the WASP HISTORIC MONUMENT erected
by the people of Sweetwater and dedicated 22 May 1993.
And I, also, like your idea of placing historic
markers on 1-20, East and West, to let travelers know
about the Texas marker and Avenger Field.
I've talked with Ethel Finley and she concurs. She
believes, as I do, that a plaque to our 38 WASP
pilots who lost their lives during WWII is best
omitted because all 38 names are marked with gold
stars on the WALK OF HONOR and are listed separately
on the large ESTES bronze bas relief that is to be
placed in the entrance hall of the new building at
TSTC located right behind the Swain-Lewis WASP statue.
The adequate and careful maintenance of any public
roadside memorial site or marker is of daily concern
and deserves careful consideration. Therefore, the
new marker and new landscaping compatible with the
West Texas climate would help visitors find their way
to Avenger Field. This indeed, would be a meaningful
tribute to the WASPs.
Ethel wants me to thank you for your interest and your
desire to do something for the WASPs. We both appreciate
dearly, your efforts, past and present. Many thanks'
Sinn erely,
Da 'Seymour
