account of the Mexicans they wanted to kill him. Thare was about
two Thousand Guerrillas down at the broken Bridge wating for
him to pass But old Santa Anna was too much for them he sent
his carridge down But he himself went another road. The Mexicans
are a great enemy of his just as sure as they get hold of him he
is a dead man. Well I dont know as I have eny more to write.

Rachel to be a good girl give my best Respects to Susan Gustin
and a - -[torn] the Branchville folks. write as soon-possible you
must excuse this writing and spelling on account of this darned

Some facetious phrase-maker has explained that the reason
why so many real old books are in such a good state of preserva-
tion is because they are put up in the best of all preservatives,
the Latin language. A tinbox, securely guarded and safely lost
in the attic of Dr. and Mrs. John Linn Allen, has kept in a good
state of preservation for 105 years a collection of letters, two of
which are presented here.
Members of the Association will be pleased to learn of the
recent honor accorded Dr. Pat Ireland Nixon of San Antonio.
On May 27, 1963, Dr. Nixon received an honorary Doctor of
Laws degree from Trinity University. Dr. Nixon, the premier
historian of medicine in Texas, is also a life member of the
executive council of the Association.
By proclamation of Secretary of the Interior Stewart L. Udall
on June 26, 1963, Fort Davis National Historic Site was officially
established as a unit of the National Park System. The historic284
