AIR MAIL
Mr. D. W. Kempner
St. Regis Hotel
New York. N. Y.
My dear Dan:
After holding our letter of October 10th for at least ten days,
the National City Bank has finally replied as per attached copy. In-
cidentally, they sent an extra copy of the letter which was initialed
GCS (George Scott). I am also sending you copy of our reply. I don't
suppose you care to go in to the National City to discuss the matter with
Mr. H. T. Gardner, Assistant Vice President, or George Scott (doubtless
his superior officer), but I thought you had better have all this data
rather than have you drift in there without it.
Dan Oppenheimer was here yesterday, spent the day and we had a
very pleasant discussion. The question of any sale by them was men-
tioned only in passing and no mention was made by either of us as to
price. Dan was apparently not interested in selling, but only in our
asserting a claim proposed by him for a reduction of the tax against
Hattie of,about, $18,000.00, which the bureau accepted some week or ten
days ago though admittedly at the start Mahan was doubtful that he would
succeed in it. The particular issue involved carried very little benefit
or comfort to any of the rest of us. Dan expressed the hope that it
would be decidedly convenient and agreeable to us to have H. Kempner
advance the amount of the tax on Hattie.
I have written to Harris Weston to find out when he and Alice
contemplate coming here. It was indicated to Lee that Harris W. would
come some time in November. I don't know whether it is contemplated
that Alice would accompany him.
It may interest you to know that on the recent call by the
Comptroller of the Currency for the statement of condition of national
banks, the United States National Badc showed deposits ahead of the
City National Bank (which has long held first position) by about
$1,000,000.00. Obviously it was due to the county deposit that the
United States National presently enjoys.
We still have not gotten the Mexican charter though we were
told at least ten days ago that the charter had been granted. We
have had no conference with Bloomfield.
We have received the data requested from Peareson' s firm at
Richmond and Stevens at Angleton that you requested, but besides fix-
ing certain dates which the documents appear of record, it furnishes
no key to other information. You will find an original and copy on
your desk.
Fondly,
11 Our love to Jeane. Hope you are both recovering from the
encl shock which you must have experienced.
