MEMO. RE "West Texas Trip" -4- April 24, 1951
It should be borne in mind that Wilson was the first who
conceived the idea of underlying water and well irrigation; this
in spite of contrary views held by others, and that we lent a
helpful and strong hand, and being pioneers in this work in the
extraordinary development of this region.
Quite noticeable was the amount of money spent by ranchers --
those interested in conservation and soil building programs -- in
adorning and beautifying their premises; ornamental gates, good
roads into their ranches and attractive signs as to ownership and
purposes.
Dairymen in this area tell me -- an opinion that I have
frequently expressed before and after the sale ol our dairy at
Sugar Land -- that we gave up a gold mine when we cloasd our
dairy; that with the productive pastures of Fort Bend and Harris
Counties, with a community of 2, 5O0 people at our door ready to
buy our milk, all we lacked was proper management.
The only risk we actually run in farming these irrigated
lands is hail and the water supply. These are less dangerous than
the risks of water supply and pink boll worm, the latter being under
fairly good control. The risk of the pink boll worm cannot be com-
pared to the damage done by the boll weevil in infected arras. Risk
of hail and water supply is considerably less remote than the lack
of rainfall, or too much rain, and high winds and storms in the
coast country.
