Chapel noise
embarrassing
As talk concerning Chapel con-
tinues the talk in Chapel grows
worse.
Wednesday it was especially bad.
A steady roar of ACU students
played background music for the
guest speaker and a steady flow of
people leaving presented more
distractions for those trying to
concentrate.
If we intend to talk through
Chapel services and leave before
they are over we give up all right
to complain about the ever increas-
ing restrictions imposed upon us.
Students continually complain
about the restrictions and changes
of Chapel. Many of our peers com-
plain about the new Vali-Dine
System and the junior-high-like
treatment they receive yet do
nothing to improve their not-so-mature
reputation in the eyes of
administrators.
At this rate the rules and restric-
tions will only get worse. In fact at
our present rate of behavior every
freedom we enjoy will be gone
soon.
Guards will have to be posted
outside each exit in Moody Col-
iseum to keep students from leav-
ing before Chapel is over.
Students will be assigned pro-
fessors to sit with in Chapel for the
purpose of monitoring our
behavior.
The actual Chapel program will
have to be altered to be more enter-
taining in order to keep our atten
'Walking
What is "walking in the light?"
It's an important question since
those who do it receive at least
two benefits according to 1 John
1:7. First we have fellowship
with God. Second "the blood of
Jesus his Son purifies us from
every sin."
But how far can we take that?
What attitudes and behavior will
God tolerate? Sermons tell us
"walking in the light" means
keeping in step with certain doc-
trinal beliefs and trying to follow
certain disciplines of lifestyle.
They tell us we benefit from a
kind of "spiritual life insurance"
letters to the editor
Ex-junkie
Dear Editor:
In response to Brian Cade's letter
in Friday's Optimist I have much
to say. I myself am a former
substance abuser a "junkie" as
well as an alcoholic who by the
name that Mr. Cade so easily
disclaims was delivered from that
Kingdom of Darkness and
transformed into the Kingdom of
Light in 1983. And it didn't take
any more than Jesus!
Those people who are not walk-
ing with the Lord we do need to
have compassion on. I know what
it is like to see someone overdose
or to sec someone shaking for a
"fix" or a person who has no
respect for life. I want to help these
people by telling them the life-
changing good news about Jesus
the Messiah the Annointed One of
God. He is the only one who ac-
tually has been to hell and has lived
to tell about itl
Only royalty can cut
Dear Editor:
Everyday after we are dismissed
from Chapel we go to stand in line
to get something to eat from the
Bean. In this 15 minute period that
I spend everyday I have noticed
that people are very inconsiderate
of others.
The other day while standing in
the slightly discomfortable line
which is next to the minor stomach
pain line I saw a group of people
coming down the middle of the two
lines. I thought that maybe we had
invited dignitaries to the school.
I struggled to see this important
individual as he went past. The
tion for the long 20 minutes.
Our parents will receive notes
from the school so they will know
how many times we have missed
Chapel.
And students will yell "they treat
us like kids." But if the shoe fits
wear it.
Not all students feel the need to
talk leave early or punch in and
leave but the sad part is it's hard
to determine who is talking and
who isn't. Therefore all must suf-
fer for the actions of the few.
Those who enjoy the Chapel ser-
vice have tried to remind their
peers of the significance of Chapel
yet Wednesday some tried sug-
gesting quiet and received un-
christian responses.
It's sad when both students and
professors are embarrassed to bring
guests - especially from other
Christian colleges - to Chapel yet
many are. And those who have
brought guests on one of our bad
days will never do so again.
The school is working to im-
prove Chapel by allowing students
to sit together keeping the worship
to 20 minutes and cutting down
on announcements. Their attempts
have not always been successful
but they are trying.
Now we the students must try
harder and Chapel will become a
more beneficial experience. And if
we begin to act like mature Chris-
tian adults we will be treated as
such.
in the light' includes loving
that causes God to overlook our
sins.
But a relative measure of suc-
cess in areas like these does not
seem to define "walking in the
light" in the context of John's let-
ter. His elaboration in 1 John
2:9-11 suggests that "walking in
the light" means loving and ac-
cepting fellow Christians.
I think of myself as a Tolerant
Conservative. Other believers may
wonder what I believe about
issues and actions that are signifi-
cant to them. They may question
my beliefs on the necessity of
baptism for the forgiveness of
needs only Jesus
Many do not believe His word or
His scripture. Actually they do
know about Him in their heads
but they do not understand the
nature and deity of my Lord and
Savior Jesus. And with the exam-
ple of all the "part-time Chris-
tians" who have a form of
godliness and deny the power
thereof I can understand why.
If we believe the Bible we would
believe we were dead in our sins
and transgressions in which we
walked when wc followed the
prince of the power of the air the
Spirit who is at work now in those
who were once disobedient. Those
of us who are true disciples and
not just "members of the Church"
understand what Paul is writing
about under the influence of the
Holy Spirit.
I was hellhound before I knew
Him but He set me free and made
me whole again. Those who are not
group got to the front of the line
and I noticed that every member
had a Vali-Dine Card. These were
not dignitaries but a group of
students just like myself. I quickly
reviewed the news from post days
and realized that no royalty hid
died so they could not be newly
appointed. After seeing the people
that thought they were royalty a
small fellow tried to impersonate
the Prince of Wales but was
discovered as a phony by a rather
large looking gentlemen who in-
formed him that he was not the
Prince and if he wanted to eat he
needed to get in the back of the line

USSR says sub harmless
Once again the Soviet Union has
demonstrated its command of
nuclear technology this time in the
field of submarine propulsion.
This week a Soviet YanA-class
nuclear missile-carrying submarine
caught fire in the Atlantic and was
disabled. A Soviet merchant ship
tried to haul it home but three
days after the fire the sub finally
sank several hundred miles north
of Bermuda. The crew was
presumed to have escaped.
This is by no means an unusual
sins. Maybe they question how I
understand the biblical position
on the status of sinners who have
never heard the gospel.

They may ask me if I believe a
aristian can fellowship non-
Christians or Christians who have
daily personal battles with drug
or alcohol abuse or with
walking in the Lord do not know
Him His counsel or His love. We
need to share it with them. If they
really make Jesus the Lord of their
life giving up every idol that
would hinder His working in their
heart He will take the Satanic op-
pression from them. I have seen
this happen hundreds of times and
I have only been a Christian for
three years!

That I may fear your name.

and wait just like the rest of us.
I hope this article has brought
out my point that people at this
school are growing inconsiderate of
each other which should not be
allowed to happen.
So if you see someone trying to
go to the front of the line ask them
if they are a member of the Royal
Family. If they say they are then
they're probably lying and that
will be taken care of by God. If
they are not royalty then they can
wait in line with the rest of us
commoners.

event for the Soviet Union. Years
ago a Go-class missile-carrying
submarine sank in the north
Pacific and was later salvaged by
the United States. In 1984 a Soviet
Alpha-class attack submarine
developed an on-board fire and
had to be rescued by the ever-
present Soviet merchant ships.
Worst of all was the 1981 incident
when a Soviet Whiskeydzss sub-
marine ran aground off one of
Sweden's most sensitive naval
bases. The Swedes were not amus
homosexual or biblically con-
demned heterosexual desires and
behaviors.
My positions and behaviors are
generally biblically conservative
though in my heart I want to be
tolerant and patient like Jesus "a
friend of ... sinners" (Matthew
11:19). But I occasionally fail.
God forbid that I in arrogant
"knowledge" think God con-
siders me a better Christian and
accepts me above those who don't
have a handle on the sins I have
under control. At that point I fail
to "walk in the light" and I lose
my fellowship with God accor
American
Reports last week in the
Washington Post indicated the
Reagan Administration had releas-
ed information to mislead the Li-
byan government.
The plan involved releasing false
information to the press to make
Libyan leader Col. Moammar
Ghaddafi believe his country was
going to be attacked.
Misinforming an enemy country
is a common form of propaganda.
But misinforming your own coun-
try is not only skeptical but a
misrepresentation of the truth.
Americans deserve to be informed
of foreign policy including planned
attacks and coups during
peacetime.
The Reagan Administration
denied planting false reports but
admitted to a policy to remove
Ghaddafi from power. President
Reagan questioned The Post's
report but said memos were pass-
ed "back and forth" about Libya.
The information was only to be
passed to the foreign press. But of-
ficials said one or more of their col

ding to 1 John.
As Christians we sin from time
to time. In matters of lifestyle we
are never to be satisfied with sin
because grace teaches us to accept
one another in our mutual strug-
gle to change disgusted with
ourselves when we miss the mark.
In matters of doctrinal belief
grace calls us to maintain a
cautious "scientific" openness to
the possibility of learning truth
that is more accurate (Acts
18:24-26). But in the process we
must also be careful about whom
we refuse to fellowship lest we
condemn ourselves.
credibility
leagues gave the inaccurate infor-
mation to the American press.
Inaccuracies about American
foreign policy in a foreign
newspaper might as well be record-
ed as inaccuracies in American
newspapers with today's rapid
movement of information.
In a New York Times interview
Reagan said the position of the
government was to have Ghaddafi
wonder what the U.S. might do to
him and his country. Reagan said
he didn't support releasing false in-
formation to the press in order to
scare Ghaddafi.
The issue is a matter of inter-
pretation. The Reagan administra-
tion through the words of
Secretary of State George Schultz
praised using deception against
Ghaddafi.
The Wall Street Journal was the
first victim of the misinformation
in August. A report in the Journal
indicated Libya and the United
States were on a "collision course."
The report included statements
from "intelligence officials" that
"For am convinced that neither death nor life neither angels
nor demons neither the present nor the future nor any powers
neither height nor depth nor anything else In all creation will be
able to separate us from the love of Cod." Romans 8.3839.

Shorts
issue
rises
The Student Life Committee is
asking for student input concern-
ing a recommendation to Dfjav
William J. Teague that wouldl
allow men to wear walking shorts
on campus.
We don't think that is the ques-
tion the committee is actually ad-
dressing but instead think it is ad
dressing the enforcement of the
university's dress code - as it
should be.
Men on campus already wear the
knee-length and above attire
despite the univeristy's dress code
which requires men to wear ankle
length pants while on campusav
Women on the other hand mayP
wear knee-length shorts.
The issue arose over equality.
If women can wear knee-length
shorts men should also be able to
wear knee-length shorts. Or
women should be required to wear
ankle-length clothes just as men are
required to wear.
However after closer examina-
tion the underlying motivation
seems to be enforcement of campus
policies.
Katny xoung a racrawr ui uicp
Students' Association and the Stu-P
dent Life Committee said she
favors changing the dress code
policy to allow men to wear knee-
length shorts but only if the
policies are going to be enforced.
Don Drennan chairman of the
committee agrees that a rule needs
to be stated and enforced.
"We need a rule that is going to
be enforced" he said.
The university does not need to
formulate new rules and policies
concerning the dress code or chapel
or any other aspect of student life ifP
it is not going to enforce those
rules.
We agree with those who think
the dress code should be equal for
both men and women. Both should
be allowed to wear knee-length atgtv
tire on campus and to classes but irW
must stop there. Above the knee to
the thigh should not be tolerated
nor should T-shirts that are open
from the arm to the waist.
Administrators stafT and faculty
should enforce the rules that apply
to campus life - that's the underly-
ing issue.
on the line
Libya was planning new terrorist
attacks.
The Reagan Administration has
not said it actively engaged in a
deception campaign to mislead the
American public. Maybe the inten-
tion was not to mislead Americans
but to mislead Libyans.
However the misinformation
did mislead the American public
and has caused the press to view
government informants withk
skepticism. P
The relationship between
government and press in this coun-
try is a relationship as important as
the Constitution's set relationship
of Checks and Balances. Once trust
is broken by either party doubt
will arise about anything said by
the government or the press.
The Reagan Administration was
wrong in devising any type of
deception plan to mislead a foreign
government in peace time. The
credibility of the government is oad
the line and the American press '
has suffered.
