The heated political battle be
tween Rep Robert D Hunter
and Larry Holmes enters the
final week of rctonc and accusa
tions

Is evangelism
first priority?
Do you ever ddnte within
yourself about how to approach
non-Christians with the gospel?
You know that you want to do
"the right thing " But some
times you find yourself at a loss
of knowing whether (1) to lm
mediately talk to the person
about his need for the gospel and
daniel'sdin
danny dixon
how it saves from sin or (2) to
wait and first talk to him about
his most pressing "felt needs "
The gospels say Jesus taught
and healed people (Mark 1 39)
Other accounts only tell of his
healing (Mark 1 40-45) But we
also have a record that reveals
teaching alone (Mark 4 1-34)
Jesus did what was appropriate
for each situation But we also
know that he was following a
ministerial itenary and he knew
how much time he could spend
cultivating a person's interest
along the way considering God's
ordered timetable for the end of
his earthly mission
We are not so privileged We
don't know when this world will
end A person's ultimate need is
for the salvation of his soul
(Mark 8 36fl) for the Scriptures
teach that unless a man has been
born again of the water and the
Spirit he cannot be a forgiven
member of God's kingdom
(John 3 3 5 Acts 2 36 38)
Foreign and domestic instances
can be given of the "rice Chris
tians" who seem to "convert"
but only because their felt needs
have been met The need for
hrlp may be real but are we
proper stewards of the things
God has entrusted to us? Do we
have the right to do as one well
fir
w-
" have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live but
Christ lues m me The life J live m the body I live by faith
in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me "

Thursday night on KTAB-TV
The final television appearances
of the week happen when the
candidates appear on KRBC-
TV's Comment progam Friday
and Saturday nights
The three programs appear
during an important time for the
voters of the 79th Legislative
District Every program should
be watched by voters in order to
see the candidates face each
other about the issues that will
affect the voters
known speaker suggested and
just "give it away no strings at-
tached" particularly as the ser-
vice we render in time and goods
relate to evangelistic outreach?
Some Christian "Evangelism
Machines" walk all over people
Bible in hand and insensitive to
their prospects' physical needs
Carnegie anan and Ziglar anan
in manner they all but peddle
the gospel as befits a good "Soul
Winner "
They maintain "We've got to
get them to come face to face
with the gospel before it's
everlastingly too late'" But
others competent and sensitive
to meet felt needs too often fail
to lay before people the gospel
message to meet the need of
forgiveness from sin and rela-
tionship with God through
"obedience of faith" (Romans
1 5 Acts 5 32)
I can still remember the Ira
man student working on his car
in front of my apartment a few
months ago A friend who was
with me had the philosophy that
one should "invite everything
that breathes" to a Bible study
so he approached the fellow with
a weakly couched dialogue of
feigned interest in the guy's car
Finally the awkward moment of
truth came and he had to offer
the invitation
The fellow was ofTended and
rightly so in my opinion He
made it clear that he didn't want
to talk to either of us about any
thing else again I couldn't help
but think that there should have
been a better way of going about
it True the world could have
ended and his soul would have
been lost if he hadn't been ap
proached
But the world didn't end and
his soul was still left lost after he
was approached Which was bet-
ter? Was it his fault or could we
have dealt with him in a manner
that would have given the gospel
a fair hearing? More later

Hunter senior vice president
of the university comes into the
debate with two months of
legislative experience and a nar-

tion Holmes the Democratic
challenger will fight for the
chance to represent the people of
Abilene
Both candidates have advan
tages of accusations over the
other person Hunter is claiming

Education dealt setback
In America religious tolera-
tion is the law and religious
pluralism is the reality
But in Tennessee the
forces of intolerance and big
otry parading themselves
under the name of Christ
have dealt a vicious blow and
won a stunning ictory
Seven families in
Greeneville Tenn won a vic-
tory in a U S District court in
a lawsuit concerning what
the considered violations of
the constitutional right of
religious freedom and their
right to a free public educa
tion
The seven families consider
themselves Christian and op
pose the use of books offensive
to their religious beliefs
The Wizard of Oz The
Diary of Anne Frank
Shakespeare's Macbeth stories
of other religions such as
Islam and American Indian
were prominent among more
than 400 objections
We as Christians can
understand not wanting
children being taught wit
chcraft magic and the super
natural
We can understand why
these fundamentalists would
object to stories of evolu
nonary dinosaurs being taught
as fact We would object as
well
But in a quest for religious
freedom the plaintiffs have
managed to require the public
schools refrain from teaching
their children that the young
Anne Frank wrote in her diarj
of religious pluralism

Space burials: different not
Dear Editor
Optimist grow up1
Some news items are quite
capable of standing on their own
without benefit of your editorial
opinion Your editorial on the
' dehumanizing" effects of space
burial was one such item
I suppose the first question that
springs to mind is How do you
dehumanize a dead person? Cer
Christian Homes thanks blood donors
Dear Editor.
On behalf of Christian Homes of
Abilene I would like to thank
everyone who gave blood during
our recent blood drive
It was the first three day dnvt we
have ever sponsored and we were
most anxious to see if students
faculty and staff would support a
blood drive that lasted for that
length of time Our goal was set at
250 pints A total of 286 pints of
Clubs must exist within university
Dear Editor.
This is a response to the letter
concerning clubs which stressed
that the administration was wrong
for taking action against the social
clubs We think the administration
was justified in its decision
Granted the administration may
not always make the right decisions
but it does cope with matters the
way it thinks best
We all need to reconsider what
this university is all about and real
ize that this community looks to us
as a "church" and the actions of
the students here reflect directly on
the church
resident for less than a year
while Hunter his been a resident
of the commumtj for 30 years
Hunter also claims that
Holmes has received more than
50 percent of his campaign con
tnbutions from outside the
district
Holmes is accusing Hunter of
misrepresenting himself on a co
sponsorship of House Bill 50
Holmes also says Hunter was ir-
responsible in discovering the
forgery of the Representatives

The fundamentalists may
not believe that followers of
Islam or American Indian
religions will make it to
heaven but that isn't the
point
There are other beliefs
There are people who believe
in magic involve themselves
in witchcraft follow strange
gods or even no god at all
Burying heads in the sand
won't make them go away
Denying the children
knowledge won't prepare
them for inevitable confronta
tamly shooting their remains into
orbit is no more disconcerting to the
deceased than pumping them full of
embalming fluid and shoving them
in upholstered boxes to be buried
In fact they might enjoy the
astronaut option more than being
burned up ind put into an urn
their ashes to be displayed on a
mantel or perhaps scattered to the
wind
blood were donated far exceeding
our goal
In tne past we have received a list
of names and addresses from the
Meek Blood Bank of those who do
nated blood This enabled us to
personally thank each donor The
Meek Blood Bank can no longer
give us these addresses because of a
ruling by the American Blood Bank
Association
We were able to locate the ad
dresses of most of those who gave
The purpose of ACU is to
educate its students for Christian
service throughout the world as
stated in the ACU catalog If our
clubs cannot remain within the
bounds of that purpose then they
should be restructured We are not
in any way against clubs but only
some of the activities that take place
within the clubs
Tor example there are clubs on
campus that are known as ' party
clubs ' and arc known to partake in
public drinking and parties This
action is certainly not befitting a
Christian university and is not what
tins institution represents Other
name three weeks later
Each candidate is accusing the
other candidate of mudslinghng
tactics
Niether candidate thought the
other would stoop to a level of
mudshnging
Holmes says Hunter has been
avoiding the real issues of the
campaign Hunter says Holmes
has always avoided the tax issues
because Holmes favored raising
taxes
The candidates have been bit
tions with more than a few of
these beliefs
If the court decision is
allowed to stand the outlook
is bleak for a future where
knowledge rather than a
system of blindly accepted
unquestioned creeds will be
the basis for choice
Religious bigotry parading
under the Christian name is
casting a cloud over those of
us who also wear the name
but still allow ourselves and
our children to learn of other
peoples' v aried beliefs
always bad
As for the living Space Services
the company involved is planning
to orbit the "ghost ship" inside one
of the earth's radiation belts some
where the shuttle will never fly if
it flies at all
Let's not be fooled into thinking
that anything different is inherently
bad

blood however there were a few
addresses we simply could not find
For those of you who donated blood
and have not received a letter of
thanks we arc using this means to
say thank you We do appreciate all
of you who took the time to give
and hope you will continue to sup
port our blood drives in the future
Very gratefully yours

complaints concern the pledge
period
When a club leaves pledges
stranded wrapped only in duct
tape as reported in a previous Op
timist the club is overstepping the
bounds that should be set and real
lzed by the university The univer
sity shouldn't have to lay down a
"Thou shalt not beat pledges" rule
to clubs whether it is tradition or
not
Every member of the student
body including members of clubs
nHc tn pvahiatr the thines he does
before he does them and think of
the impact they might have on the
tcrly opposed on the issues from
the beginning of the campaign
and this weeks' debate forum
and interviews will let each can-
didate present his ideas to the
voters
Every voter should watch each
of the television programs this
week to make a better dccisJfl d
concerning the candidates' poT
tion
The truth will have a better
chance of surfacing if the public
is allowed to make a decision
Campaign
confuses
Texans
The 1986 gubernatorial elec-
tion is attracting a great deal of
national attention This in itself
is not unusual After all it is the
highest position in state gov-
ernment However the focus of atten-
tion in this race is the mudslide m
ing tactics being used by oprw
nents Republican Bill Clements
and Democrat Mark White to
discredit one another in their
quest for the Governor's Man
sion
Voters will have a difficult
time discerning what each can-
didate stands for in the face of
their flying accusations at to
what the other represents In
other words the candidates are
so busy insulting each other tne
seem to have forgotten that ttP
are conducting an election cam-
paign not a wrestling match
Despite the fact that White
and Clements spend a great deal
of money to finance their per
sonal attacks on each other ratb
than promoting their respectiW
ideas and programs if one tnes
hard enough one can surmise a
few of the ideas each candidate
represents
Both men seem to agree that
problems in the Texas state
budget are a top priority al-
though each has different ideas
on how to solve the deficit and
the other problems
Both men also seem to agree
that Texas does not need a stat
White has already taken a
stand on public education
reforms through his teacher
testing program
Clements has responded to
public criticism of tax hikes by
promising not to raise taxes for
the budget year ending in 1987
Information on how the can
didates stand on other issues is
difficult to find However
should one want to know what a
certain candidate is against 4te
one has to do is tune in to tr
advertising of the opposing can
didate
Because competition between
the major candidates does not
seem to be producing a clear cut
leader a third candidate Liber-
tarian Theresa Doyle of San An
tonio has entered the race
A fourth candidate repre
senting a racist group is not
worth mentioning
Neither candidate seems afe
merit an outright endorsement P
Perhaps a prize could be given
for the candidate most proficient
in mudshnging
community and its image of not on
ly tne university out ot jesus innst
If clubs are going to exist they
need to exist within the written
code of the university If any cli
cannot do this it needs to
evaluate its usefulness as a club
