Sharyn Renner cleaned out her
locker Wednesday afternoon.
"She was the last one In there"
Coach Wes Kittley said. "She
stayed a little longer. You could tell
It was affecting her."
She had a lot to reflect on: Four
year of volleyball at ACU winn-
ing Freshman of the Year honors In
the Lone Star Conference learning
from Stacy Atkinson going through
the transition from Coach Kathy
Moore to Klttley making the road
trips "in a van with 15 girls all
quenched up."
She was looking back on 10 total
years of organized volleyball. She
says she actually began playing the
sport when she was in the third
grade and was allowed to play with
the sixth-grade team.
In her senior season at Amariilo
High School she led her team to a
36-1 record. At ACU she was
Freshman of the Year on a 19-18
team.
"It was a shock to me when I got
it because I don't even think I knew
they had that" she says of the
honor.
But two disappointing seasons
and a world of outside activities
helped her to realize that volleyball
soon would be over and other
avenues would have to be explored.
"We all realize that volleyball's
not going to be the rest of our
lives" she said of the members of
this Vcar's team. "It took me awhile
to figure that out too because I
was thinking Olympics and
everything else in high school. I
wanted to do it all."
But it occurred to her that doing
it all meant becoming a more well-
rounded person and changing her
views about volleyball. Her level of
play continued to improve but
volleyball's place in her life began
to change.
"She was fired up when she caine
Top-ranked teams bump heads for title
Two nationally ranked teams will
clash Saturday in Kingsville with
the LSC title and possible NCAA
Division II playoir invitation up for
grabs.
The NCAA is expected to an-
nounce its eight-team playoff pair-
ings Sunday.
A&I ranked first in the national
poll already has at least a share of
the 1987 championship after a 35-
28 win over ACU Saturday. The
Rams 7-2 3-1 in conference-play
can force A co-championship with a
win.
Coach Jerry VandergrifTs team
was ranked 13th before its 49-8
triumph over East Texas State.
Coach Ron Harms' team 9-1 and
4-0 has lost standout junior
fullback Heath Sherman for the
season with a knee injury. Sopho-
more running back Johnny Bailey.
ACHS stays
in playoff bid
for TAPS title
The road to a possible Texas
Association of Private Schools Divi-
sion II state championship for the
Abilene Christian High School Pan-
thers must go through Fort Worth
Temple Christian High School in
their semifinal game.
Kickoff is set for 7?30 p.m. Fri-
day in Mineral Wells.
The Panthers remain undefeated
with a record of 10-0-1 and arc be-
ing led by an overpowering defense
that has allowed just two touch-
downs all season.
One of those touchdowns came in
hut week' 15-7 quarterfinal win
over Lubbock Christian High
School.
Leading that defense is a strong
defensive line that is anchored by
Picky Kisslck Frank Peck and
Preston Gardner at defensive tackle.
Their teammates on the defensive
line are defensive ends Kyle
Dickson Cloy Halla and Mick Mc-
Clain One of the reasons ACHS has
such a strong defensive unit is
because nine of the 11 starters have
been playing and starting since their
freshman year in high school.
The Panthers also have two of the
best linebackers in TAPS in
Michael Halla and Chris Kisslck.

in here but they weren't real suc-
cessful so I think she looked at
things from a different perspective'
Coach Wes Klttley said rI think
she played just as hard and loved
the game just as much but she
looked at things differently."
The 5-10 senior with the striking
red hair says being a part of a team
that knows more than just athletics
will mate the transition from sports
to business easier
"I think volleyball in itself here
gave me the opportunity to be more
than an athlete because the girls on
the team aren't just jocksM says the
fashion merchandising major.
"They like to do other things
besides volleyball. There's so much
more."
The team did well enough in
volleyball to finish 16-8 and Klttley
said Kenner's leadership was a ma-
jor part of that season.
"Probably a? much as anyone she
was my silent coach this year" said
Klttley who was coaching
volleyball for the first time. "If I
wanted to know how the team felt
I'd go to her. She had a feel for the
flow of the game; she'd know who
to go to who was down."
Renner said she wanted to help
but not to get in the way. "I wanted
to let him icnow that I was there if
he needed to run a certain play or
something but I didn't want to in-
terfere with his coaching" she says.
And although the team didn't win
a Lone Star Conference title Klt-
tley says Renner played her last
matches as if she was battling for
one.
"She was positive up to the very
end and that's hard to do when
you're not fighting for the title" he
says. " 'Quit' is just not in her vo-
cabulary." The success of her senior season
makes it a little easier for her to
walk away from volleyball and look
toward a career in fashion merchan-
dising. She says she hopes to own a
store someday when she lias the
from Houston Yates was under 100
yards for only the third time in his
career in a 94-yard performance
against ACU but he scored three
touchdowns in the comeback win.

West Texas State and a 16-8

behind WTSU in third.
"We scared a lot more people

Kittley said the fact that East

"That sap a lot for the LSC"
he said. "No one has ever gotten
