THE HOWE ENTERPRISE THURSDAY NOVEMBER 24, 1977
Attendance Small at Town Meeting
Sandra Selby, daughtr of Mr. and Mrs. Ray W.
Selby of Irving, and grandaughter of Mrs. L. W.
Selby of Howe, has accepted a position at Parkland
Memorial Hospital in Dallas. Miss Selby will be
employed in the Surgical and Trauma Intensive Care
Unit of the hospital. She is a 1976 graduate of
Grayson County College and was formerly employed
by Irving Community Hospital as a charge nurse of a
surgical unit.
What a nice Thanksgiving holiday surprise for
Bessie and Mack McDonough. Daughter, Rosemary,
and family arrived on Friday for a 10 day visit.
Rosemary’s husband, Dick, is manager of the Levi
plant in Powell, Tennessee.
A most interesting magazine was brought to the
Enterprise office this week by a resident. It was the
July 1958 edition of TV, Radio Mirror magazine.
Inside there was a feature article on our own Joe
Tolbert. Joe, a former radio-newsman with station
WFAA in Dallas was doing an interview with Texas
Governor Price Daniel, along with photos of Joe’s
wife, Nita, and daughters, Tanda and Jonita. Joe
has worked at a number of radio stations, including
WBZ in Boston, WNOX, Knoxville, and KGGM in
Albequerque. Joe served as MC at the Town
Meeting held at the high school on Saturday.
During registration, the question of Joe’s age came
up. He was non-committal. TV, Radio and Mirror
clearly states in their 1958 issue that “Joe wasn’t
born yesterday.’’
John Richardson has moved into his new garage on
Denney Street in the south end of town. We wish
John well in this new location.
It is amazing how much talent exists in our town. I
am speaking of the fine voices heard at the Town
Meeting on Saturday. Jean Norman, who is always
a treaty opened the meeting. During a brief
intermission Wrenda Francis, Art Rayburn, Brenda
Baker and Virginia Baker entertained the group.
Bazaar Extended
The United Methodist
Women of Howe will hold
their bazaar for an ad-
ditonal day this year. The
bazaar will open on
November 25, from 10 a.m.
until 6 p.m. int he fellow-
ship hall of the church
located on Highway 5,
north of Howe.
There will be handmade
gift items and Christmas
decorations from which to
choose.
A small number of Howe
residents attended Howe’s
first Town meeting on
Saturday.
Even though the number
was small, the group was
enthusiastic and worked
together toward a common
goal—Howe—it’s good
features, its problems, and
each person looked for an
answer.
The group was rep-
resented by across section
of city residents. The
youngest participant was
Steve Wallace, a senior at
Howe High School. Other
participants were from
civic groups, the Howe
school system, and several
long time Howe residents.
The meeting, sponsored
by the Institute of Curltural
Affairs, was conducted by
volunteers from Dallas,
and was held at the high
school cafetorium.
The group was divided
into small workshops and
after discussing many of
How’s needs, met again as
a body to discuss issues.
Good points of the com-
munity were pointed out by
the group. Mainly,
Howe’s rural type at-
mosphere, the friendliness
of its people, and Howe’s
good school system.
Under Howe’s economic
plan the most pressing
needs discussed by the
group are more jobs for
residents, a need for in-
dustry, and the creation of
more housing.
Under political issues, the
group saw a need for more
political involvement, a
need for greater voter
turnout, and the lack of
funds now facing the city,
due to low taxes.
The group also discussed
the most pressing need of
the community, the need of
a full time physician. It
was agreed that with the
location of a doctor in
Howe, that a clinic would
follow. A need for a public
library was also cited and
more co-operation between
schools and churches.
During a brief inter-
mission entertainment was
furnished by Wrenda
Francis, Brenda Baker,
Virginia Baker and Art
rayburn.
Following intermission
Howe’s future goals were-
discussed and a solution to
some of the problems dis-
cussed. They are:
The reactivation of Howe
Industrial Foundation, to
revitalize the Chamber of
Commerce and provide
more effiective com-
munications for the
community.
In order to increase the
city’s revenue, the group
suggested a town barbe-
que, a community wide
garage sale, the removal of
favoritism from tax rolls
and that the city be called
upon to campare the tax
structure with other towns
of comparable size.
A group also discussed
a need for more in-
volvement of newcomers
and the need for a local
group to sponsor a cam-
paign for voter registration
and to act as a welcoming
committee for newcomers.
During the meeting a
committee of Carrie Wal-
ler, Arthur Boyle and
Willis Dykes told the
gathering of the back-
ground of Howe, composed
a Howe song, and showed
a symbol which depicted
several objects that had
contributed to Howe’s
background.
