THE PADUCAH POST PADUCAH, TEXAS THURSDAY DEC. 4, 1947
Considering all the factors
pushing upward, business an-
alysis say it is surprising that
prices are no higher than they
are.
Federal statistics for the per-
iod since 1939 show this over-all
picture:
1. The money supply has in-
creased 225%.
2. Physical Production of in-
dustrial goods has increased
70%.
3. National Income has in-
creased 173%.
4. Gross National product has
increased 150%.
5. Wholesale prices of all com-
modities have increased 100%.
From these statistics, anal-
ysts find that the present price
level actually is low in relation
to the national income.
In addition, it is deduced that
there is little if any danger of a
collapse of either prices or pro-
duction, so far as the buying
power controlled by the public
is concerned, because the gross
national product is low in pro-
portion to the money supply.
Another Important fact, it is
pointed out, is that the Ameri-
can public has shown no signs
of questioning the integrity of
the dollar. On the contrary, all
reports show virtually the en-
tire world seeking to accumu-
late dollars.
It may give small comfort to
the housewife when she goes
shopping, but the United States
has fared better than most of
the west of the world. A survey
of the costs of living in 32 coun-
tries, compiled by the Statisti-
cal Office of the United Nations,
and covering the 10-year period,
1937-1947, shows only six na-
tions have a better record than
the United States in “holding
the line” on prices.
