Alpha Academic Services is
beginning a process to provide
separate funding for Disability
Services
This portion of Alpha has
seen an increase of almost 1000
percent since its creation in
1987 it started with 13 stu-
dents and currently serves 121
Alpha provides academic
help for first-generation college
students Pell Grant qualifiers
and students with learning or
physical disabilities

Abilene said he is happy to
have the help given by wore
and mentors working in the
program

get out of my Academic

said -"There are. some awesome
tutors down here
Working on an individual
basis tutors decode students'
learning styles and preferences
in order to give helpful advice
regardless of the format a given
professor is using
"As entrance requirements
are raised there will always be
those students who need that
extra little push" said Gloria

Academic Services
Bradshaw said the academic
structure in high school often is
teacher-centered meaning teach-
ers play a more direct role in
telling students what to Ieam and

more leamer-centered meaning
teachers outline expectations and
place more responsibility on the

the staff at Alpha teaches stu-
dents to assert themselves as
individuals to knowjheir own
abilities and "to share them

Bradshaw said she has seen
students with learning disabilities
come to her in their junior or
senior year never before heanng
about the services provided at
ACU and across the country The
overall ACU graduation rate sits
at about 50 percent the rate for
students who come through
Alpha is about 53 percent
"When you consider we are
working with students who
predictably are coming to col-
lege as dropout prone I think
thats a remarkable success "
Bradshaw said
Established in 1987 this
program serves disadvantaged
students whether they are first
generation college students stu-
dents coming from economical
ly disadvantaged backgrounds
or-students with learning dis
abilities Tutoring and counsel
ing are provided through this
pograrnas well as accommo
datlonsfor students with dis
abilities in order to help stu
dents obtain the degrees they
are seeking
Funded primarily by a grant
from the United States
Department of Education a staff
of roughly 15 assists students
for whom college was not a reg-
ular part of family life These
students' families may not share
the students interest in higher
education
Originally Alpha Academic
Services was a branch of the
Learning Enhancement Center
In recent years however they
have become separate entities
All testing and tutoring still is
held in the LEC
Alpha Academic Services
trams its own tutors but it also
takes advantage of the tutors
who work in the LEC working
as a sort of cooperative between

ized the agenda but plans to
also include time for discussion

"My ultimate goal is to have
people leave the meeting feeling
like they know some specific
ways to act and to become
champions of diversity" Sloan
said
Sloan said she expects more
than 100 people to attend the
