Ambition ia a noble attribute if
pursued along the right line. Some
of our local boys seem to have a
rather perverted sense of ambition
though, and seem determined to
get themselves and the town in the
lime light.
To take a few chickens occa-
sionally. and a little gasoline here
and there, and other such odds
and ends, seemed far too tame, so
they are widening the scope of
their activities, to include something
of greater value. This ia not in-
tended as a sermon against such
endeavors. To those whose am-
bition lies in that direction, this
discourse would indeed fall on
stony ground. So instead, we are
saying. "Proceed boys, go the limit
if that is your desire."
Dil linger, Clyde Barrow and
all of their kind probably started
in a very modest way too, and they
didn't atop until they trod the en-
tire path. Likely they first took a
schoolmate’s pencil or a pocket
knife, then kept on until they felt
competent to manipulate a deal of
larger proportions. So it all de-
pends on what one really wants to
do.
Palo Pinto has a number of boys
who have grown up here, of whom
we feel justly proud. They have
shown what one can do who has
the right kind of ideals and the de-
termination to achieve them. Others
seem to prefer another way. But
we wish they had first gone away
and taken another name, so that
their families and their families’
friends would be spared the worry
and humiliation they caused. After
all, it’s not the name but the person
bearing it that means very much,
and there's no one responsible but
ourselves if we choose as our goal,
a gangster’s slab in a morgue some
day, or something more honorable,
if less spectacular.
