Rep. McConnell Announces
For Re-Election
In announcing for re-election as
representative of this district, J.
Carroll McConnell says that he
wants the peepls to know that
during his past term he has tried
to bo the type of represeatative
that they wanted, and that he was
always on the job, doing his best
to serve them to the best of his
ability. Many members left Austin
each Fridav, but Mr. McConnell re-
mained et his post working on bills,
answering letters, etc. During his
past term-.of office Mr. McConnell
waged the most extensive fight
against lobbyists that has been
made iu years. He was invited on
one occasion to visit the gas fields
in the panhandle of Texas with
other representatives, all expanses
paid, but ha refused. Another in
vitatioa urged him to visit the sul-
phur mines and take a fishing trip
to the coast, with expenses paid.
He refused other similar invitations
and spent his time working on bills,
while many members were
sway on such excursions paid by
lobbyists. "If such members would
diligently remain at their
posts of duty, while the legislature
is in session, more could bo ae
complished at less expense to the
people,* Mr. McConnell stated.
One member advised him to let
the lobbyists alone for fear they
would defeat his re election in an
indirect way. In reply to this advice
Mr. McConnell stated, *1 am pledg-
ed to my people to do one mem-
ber’s pert m a legislative reform at
Austin and feel it my sworn duty
to do what 1 can regardless of the
outcome. A man should not be
afraid 4o fight for wjiat is right.*
Two days after Mr. McConnell
filed his anti-lobby bill the lobbyists
tried to retaliate and fire back by
sanding a misleading report to
Mineral Wells. *They circulated
a misleading statement that I was
supporting a measure that would
have the effect of stopping the
busaee between Mineral wells and
