Many of the rules for the care ! ___________________—-
of the children’s eyes hold for
adults:
the same salt solution
may be used to wash out the
eyes;everything coming in contact
with the eyes should be clean;
and serious infections and acci-
dents should be treated without
delay. To a large extent infec-
tions can be avoided by not us-
ing the towels or handkerchiefs
of others and by washing the
hands before touching the eyes.
An eye cup is not very sanitary,
and it is preferable to use eye
drops or to wash out the eyes as
previously described.
If the natural flow of tears
does not remove something that
gets into the eye, like a lash or
cinder, a physician should be
consulted. Unskilled attempts to
remove a foreign body from the
cornea may cause scars to form
that will cut down the vision.
In industry, the value of safety
glasses in protecting the work-
man’s eyes from flying pieces of
metal, stone, glass, dust and
wood is well recognized. The
eyes need to be safeguaHed with
special lenses against intense
light as well. Employers also
need to provide adequate light
and to urge the employee to
wear ordinary glasses to correct
the vision if necessary to do his
particular job.
Preventing blindness is every-
body’s business.

PLACES OF WORSHIP AND IN THE FAMILY CIRCLE THROUGHOUT
THE NATION, CELEBRATES THE SPIRITUAL AND POLITICAL
FREEDOM AND THE MATERIAL WELL-BEING WE HAVE ACHIEVED
BY HOLDING FAST TO THE IDEALS OF OUR DEMOCRACY,
protected from undue glare, such
as direct sunlight. Toys should be
large with no sharp edges.
If there is any doubt that the
two eyes are not working toge-
ther, especially after the age
of six months, the baby’s eyes
should 'be examined. Parents
whose children have crossed eyes
should not expect them to “grow
out of it.”
If a child has not been ex-
amined by the time he enters
school, he should have a com-
plete eye examination and
should report for a checkup
thereafter as often as directed by
the doctor. Those whose vision is
severely handicapped even with
glasses might be better off eith-
er in sightsaving classes or a
special school than in regular
classes.
More than half of the eye ac-
cidents among children occur
during unsupervised play. Dan-
gerous toys—air guns, fireworks,
slingshots, and so on—should be
forbidden. If an accident hap-
pens, however, the child should
receive prompt medical attention.

side layer of the eyeball) if not

Blindness Is a word that puts
fear into the heart of man. Some
1 people assume that blindness is,
more or less, bad luck or an act
of God. Certain employers, for
example, set aside large funds
and buy insurance to treat work-
ers with eye injuries, or pay
them compensation for the loss
of their eyes, neglecting the pos-
itive approach of a thorough-go-
ing program for guarding
against accidents.
Some blindness is unavoidable,
it is true, but programs to pre-
vent the loss of sight have been
I proved effective in many areas,
including adequate care for ex-
pectant mothers to save the eye-
sight of their babies, and safety
campaigns in industry. Research
into the causes and treatment of
some eye diseases is still needed,
but more than half the cases of
blindness could be prevented us-
ing medical knowledge already
existing.
People with good eyesight are
anxious to do all they can to
hold on to it and want their chil-
dren to be free from the handi-
cap of blindness. The logical
question, then, is “how can I
save my sight and care for my
child’s eyes?”
Care of the eyes begins even
before birth. Every pregnant wo-
man should have a thorough ex-
amination and treatment for sy-
philis or other disease which
may affect the child’s eyes. Ade-
quate care of the mother is pro-
tection for the child. Laws re-
quiring the use of drops in the
eyes of newborn infants to pre-
vent blindness from gonorrhea
have helped cut the rate of chil-
dren admitted to schools for the
blind as a result of this disease
from 28 out of 100 admittances
in 1908 to 2 out of 100 today.
During infancy, the tears are
the best protection against in-
fection, but if it is necessary to
wash out the eye, one level tea-
spoonful of table salt added to
a pint of water may be used; an
all-rubber syringe qf the type us-
ed to wash out ears will provide
a means of gently irrigating the
eye. Large clumps of mucus can
be removed with soft cotton
swabs soaked in plain water.
Everything which might come
in contact with the child’s eyes
should be clean—clothes, bed-
ding, toys. The eyes should be
