I his movie scared the ever-
lovin' jaboobiis out of me and
I loved every minute of it.
And first things first be-
cause it's what everyone wants
to know RM Dragon is infinite-
ly incredibly better than
Hannibal (1999) It's more re-
miniscent of the one that really
started It all Tlic Silence of the
flHtf(1991)
Hannibal went for gory over
story which is a huge mistake
it's always better to let the
imagination run wild than to
pour on the caro syrup
Hut Dragon is based on the
book of the same name by Tho-
mas Harris author of Silence
and Hannibal It was made
into a movie before Man-
hunter (1906) directed by Mic-
hael Mann and starring Brain
Cox as Hannibal and Dennis
freakln' Farina as I Bl Section
Chief Jack Crawford Red
Dragon uses Harvey Keitcl for
Crawford resulting in a slightly
lcss-mob-relatcd feeling and
the rest of the cast is also ama-
ing Ldward Norton who can do
no wrong for me plays I HI
Agent Will Graham die man
responsible for bringing in
Hannibal the Cannibal Lec-
tor (Anthony Hopkins) though
at a considerable personal
health risk (Lector threatened
to cat his heart)
Years later Graham is re-
tired and living in I lorida with
wife (Mary-Louise Parker) and
son Crawford comes to sec
him for insight after two fami-
lies in two states are murdered
by a killer die papers call the

After visiting the fir-st crime
scene Graham is persuaded by
Crawford to use II tnnibal Lec-
tors analytical powers to pro-
vide clues
Hits movie makes great use
of small details when Graham
first visits Lecter he takes a
break while letting lecter
examine the case lite In the
break room Graham takes his
eoat off revealing huge sweat
stains under his arms Tins
image says more about his feel-
ings than any dialogue could
One of the films greatest
moments occurs when Gra
ham again visits I ecter Ibis
time in the exercise room
I ecter is cuffctl and chained lo
a track on the ceiling but he's
walking around freely and
tlwiv's no glast belli ten litem
Utter makes a mock lunge at
Graham hissing and 1 just
about wet myself
And hercs the thing I ien-
nes as 1 rands Oolarhjde cre-
ates a killer til it ou can almost

insanity lie is almost leseucd
by Hcb.i a woman from work
(even psychos need a day job)
Heba played by 1 inily
Watson Is blind and her inter-
est in him causes Uolarhyde to
begin to doubt his killing he
genuinely likes Heba and
doesnt want to hack her into
taco filling The emotion of
Dolarhydes unraveling is
painful lint amazing to watcli
I ike all great thrillers the
best parts of this movie arcnt
the violent scenes but the lack
thereof not music but silence
not presence but shadow
I was on the edge of my scat
throughout scenes with no
blood or violence at tall but
the potential was so great and
the suspense so taut that the
waiting was worse than the
actual killing
In one scene Dolarhydc
interrogates a prisoner a
tabloid reporter I lie reporter
lias been glued into a chair and
is forced to watch a gruesome
slide show or the killer s victims
being brutally mutilated
throughout the movie we feel
the same way. glued down
scared to death but totally
unable to look away
