Students ready to head home
for the holidays see family
Christmas beckons
as students eagerly
look forward
Meunie 1 Knox

Students who manage to
look through the dark woods
of final exams sec light in the
Christmas break. Thanks-
giving only served as a taste
of the rest and play to come
and the time to be spent with
family.
"Spending time with my
family has become more
important since I've been at
school" said Anne York
freshman undecided major
from Franklin Tcnn. "1
haven't gotten to see them
much this semester."
Other students agreed.
"The family aspect has
become much stronger since
I've been away" said Jordan
Lugar freshman financial
management major from
Dallas.
"Spending time with my
family means more" said Cal
Bcnagllo junior manage
ment major from Austin.
"They don't get on my nerves
as much."
Garrett I'russncr junior
English major from ltich-
ardson is looking forward to
actually having a break.
"I'm really looking forward
to having more than five
minutes to process what's
going on" I'russncr said.
Daniel Clark senior psy-
chology and communica-
tions major from Grapevine
appreciates the longer break
at Christmas.
"It gives you more time to
hang out with your family
and to just mess around. I'm
also going skiing and I'm so
pumped."
I'russncr felt that Christ-
mas means more now.
"It's absolutely more spiri-
tual" Prussncr said. "Just the
fact that Jesus humbled him-
self and became nothing
instead of exerting or relin-
quishing power ... that's real-
ly huge. Christianity today Is
so much of an institution that
is power-driven. Christmas
reminds us that the kingdom
is based on self sacrifice."
Beauchamp remembered in service

the underdog Wildcats to
an 11-0 record.
The 1950 team whose
players sang before every
game and were dubbed "1 he
Singing Christians" became
the only undefeated untied
college football team in the
country with as many as 1 1
wins.
"That team is still very
close" said Jerry Mullins
who played halfback on the
1950 team "but future
reunions will not be the
same without Coach
Beauchamp."
Alton Green fullback and
co-captain of that celebrated
team noted that Beauchamp
died on the 52nd anniversary
of the 11th and final victory
in the famed Refrigerator
Bowl.
"Many of us have spent 52
years grateful for what he
did" Green said. "To him
those kids sitting on the end
of the bench were just as
important as the starters."
Gary Beauchamp and
Green both recalled the
coach wash
ing his play-
ers' uniforms
and pain-
stakingly cl-
eaning the
mud from
their cleats
refusing help
because "th-
ese arc my
boys."
The sur-
viving mem-
bers of the
1950 team
also led the
congregation
"When the Roll is Called Up
Yonder."
"To him those
kids sitting on
the end of the
bench were just
as important as
the starters."

Beauchamp was named
dean of students in 1956
marking the first of 35 years
in which Beauchamp or
"Beech" as many called him
served as a student life
administrator.
"I never
knew a man
who had a way
with people like
Garvin Beau-
champ" said
university Pres-
ident Hoyce
Money who
served as an
associate dean
under Beauch-
amp in the
1960s. He said
the number of
students whose
lives Beau-
champ had turned around
was probably in the thousands.
Money said he remem-
bered Beauchamp dismiss-
ing students from the school
for disciplinary reasons with
"tears in his eyes and a
quiver in his voice" because
he cared so much for them.
Beauchamp would often
call dismissed students and
encourage them to rccnroll
the next semester.
"I've also seen those stu-
dents thank him" said
Money who was joined in
attendance by Dr. Bill league
and Dr. John C. Stevens the
two surviving presidents
under whom Beauchamp
served.
In 19B7 the university
honored Beauchamp and his
wife Judy for 50 years of
service by naming after them
the stone amphitheater at
the base of the Tower of
Light.
