Kindergarten Notice
Because .of possible crowded condi-
tions this fall in the kindergarten I
have asked advice from onfc* state
superintendent, Miss Annie Webb
Blanton. She suggests limiting at-
tendance to certain ages. For the
first month therefore only those pu-
pils six years of age need apply for
admission. If then our number is
not reached younger children will be
admitted.

as, returned to her home Wednesday
Mrs. Coggins and her daughter Quida
Leih, and Loice,-Jiave been here for
a week’s visit with her father, Wil-
liam Duncan. »
Chas. D. Lovelace arrived Tuesday
with a party of homeseekers who are
interested in the bright future of the
Valley. He has twelve cars on this
drive and will be able to show the
people Some fine country due to the
r.ew roads which have been built
around Santa Maria.
One of the most widely enjoyed
social events of this season was the
barbecue and supper tendered the
people of Santa Maria and commu-
nity last Saturday night with Mr. and
Mrs. W. B. Benge as hosts. The
gathering was held in the lawn east
of the Benge home where a table,
long enough to hold the “eats” but
much too short for such a crowd, was
the center of attraction from about
five in the afternoon until seven.
After everyone was sure that they
were quite through with the supper
the children of the place rendered a
delightful program .of readings and
songs. They were unexpectedly as-
sisted by several little visitors who
willingly gave to an appreciative au-
dience several selections. Victrola
music was enjoyed throughout the af-
ternoon as also were the pets about
the home, especially the . Mexican
pheasants and guineas which filled
the smaller children with glee.
Games for the younger people com-
pleted the evening and every one ex-
pressed themslvs as having a most
deilghtful time when finally this hap-
py day as all other good things, came
to an end. The people ojf Santa
Maria are glad to count among
themselves such valuable citizens as
their host and hostess at the barbe-
cue and the splendid crowd of people
who were there.

Locals Hit Stride and Give Only 4
Scores in as Many Games. Beat
San Benito
Whatever may be said against the
eariler games of the season, i the
Mercedes base ball team has at least
hit its stride and is winning games
in one, two three order. The local
scorekeeper shows that in the last 31
innings of baseball played by the lo-
cals only four runs have been made
against them, while in the same 31
innings the locals have scored elev-
en times against their opponents.
A fine example of big league ball
was given Sunday when Mercedes
beat San Benito, a very strong team,
by a score of 2 to 0. The game was
played on the Camp Mercedes dia-
mond and was a thriller from start
to finish.

teresting one with Miss Jones as
their instructor.
The early part of the evening was
spent transacting business connect-
ed with the class. Games were then
played and a delicious course of re-
freshments of ice cream and cake
were served.
Tjose enjoying the evening were
Misses Cleo Darlington, Dorris Ba-
trum, Lucile Morrow, Grace Wright,
Vida West, Bessie Vining; Mrs. J.
J. Busby, W. P. Fuller, G. C. Latham.
