Dear People of Cottle County,
I believe you are interested
in the results of our Cancer
Fund Campaign. With the help
of some sixty volunteer workers
we exceeded our quota of $700.
I mailed a check to our state
treasurer today for $711.00. There
are a few more workers to re-
port.
Many people expressed a de-
sire for a fund for our local
needs. From this fund our com-
mittee will provide sick-room
supplies, dressings, etc. These
I supplies are available to all who
need them. Our Cottle County
fund nears $500.
Memorials continue to come;
in and we appreciate your in-!
terest in that phase of the pro-
gram.
We shall seek to use your
every penny wisely, and the
property will be well-cared for
and closely checked upon.
Thank you for your most gen-
erous response.
Sincerely,
Carmen Bennett

County Agent Urges
Stockmen’s Help In
Screwworm Control
Cottle County Agent L. M.
McCarroll reports that because
of extremely favorable weather
conditions for screwworms ac-
tivity, screwworms have spread
into Central and West Texas,
most of the counties in the Ed-
wards Plateau and about half
the counties in the Trans-Pecos
area.
McCarroll says that plans are
being made to expand the ster-
ile screwworm fly release area
to include most of the infested
area. The majority of the serile
flies being produced will be
released in a barrier zone which
will encompass the northern
edge of the screwworm infested
area.
He encourages all livestock
producers to inspect all livestock
regularly, to treat all wounds
promptly, and to collect ten or
more worms from deep in the
wound and bring them to his
office. McCarroll points out
that the more screwworms that
are killed by chemical treat-
ment, the fewer sterile flies will
be required to overwhelm the
native flies.
“If you do not have vials to
ship a sample of the worms,
the county agent has a supply
and will be glad to furnish
them for the purpose of ship-
ping to The Screwworm Eradi-
cation Program P. O. Box 969,
Mission, Texas. Some of the
larva being found in wounds
at this time is the blow fly
and not the true screwworm,”
the agent pointed out.
