eral Home in Baytown.
BLANCHARD
Services for John Blanchard,
73, of Liberty will be held at 2
p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22,1992, at
the Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church in Liberty.
Blanchard died Thursday,
Aug. 20, in a Baytown hospital.
He had lived in Liberty for 40
years, working as a self-
employed painter. He served in
the U.S. Army during World
War II and was a member of
V.F.W. Post No. 5621.
He is survived by his step-
sons, Jack Rulon of Hardin and
Kenneth Rulon of Silsbee;
brothers, Tilman Blanchard of
Baytown and Tanzy Blanchard
of Eunice, La.; sisters, Zula Bel-
lard of Jennings, La., Lena Thi-
bodeaux, Alice Lejune, Lorene
Lejune, Naomi Labbie, all of
Church Point, JLa., and Justine
Higgonbotham of Eunice, La.;
four step-grandchildren; one
step-great-grandchild; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
A wake will be held at 7 p.m.
Friday, Aug. 21, at the Allison
Memorial Chapel in Liberty.
Visitation will begin at noon
Friday in the funeral home.
The burial will be held at
Guedry Cemetery in Batson.
Services are under the direc-
tion of Allison Funeral Service.

Services for Charles A. “Gus”
Harlan, 82, of Baytown will be
held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug.
22. 1992, at White Chapel Fun-
eral Home in Baytown with the
Rev. E. Richard Steel
officiating.
Harlan died Thursday, Aug.
20, in a Baytown hospital.
Bom in Mission on July 18,
1910, he had been a resident of
Baytown since 1940. He was a
member of Cedar Bayou Baptist
Church in Baytown and a retired
farmer.
He was preceded in death by
a daughter, Sylvia Ludtke.
He is survived by his wife of
56 years, Irene Harlan; son and
daughter-in-law, Jerry and Re-
gina Harlan of Baytown; son
and daughter-in-law, Charles
and Jackie Harlan of Bay City;
brother, W.E. Harlan of Bay-
town; grandchildren, Lanna
Doggett, Brett Harlan, Leesa
Harlan, Gordon Ludtke, Leslie
Ann Ludtke, Trent Ludtke, An-
gie Johnston and Brace Harlan;
nine great-grandchildren; uncle,

ODESSA — Workers Friday probed the ashen remains of chemi-
cal containers that exploded in a blaze that forced thousands from
their homes and sent dozens for hospital treatment.
SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Heizegovina — Shells hit the capital’s main
hospital and set government headquarters ablaze overnight in one of
the fiercest bombardments in weeks, as Sarajevo awaited aid prom-
ised by Serb-dominated Yugoslavia. This morning, hospital officials
reported at least 11 people were injured overnight.
AVERY, Calif. — Cooler, damper weather gave firefighters the
upper hand Friday over a wildfire that has blackened nearly 18,000
acres in a six-day rampage and forced the evacuation of 14,000
people from picturesque Gold Rush towns.
WASHINGTON —- Experimental cystic fibrosis drags that re-
quire a year of human testing may be tested in only 15 days with a
new gene-altered mouse that researchers hope ultimately will point
them toward a cure. Scientists at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill reported in the journal Science Friday they have mani-
pulated the genetic structure in a strain of mice to create the first
animal model of cystic fibrosis.

Hispanic Democrats of Baytown will host a poolside recep-
tion for Gene Green, candidate for Congressional District 29,
