89-year-old woman walks across America

Associated Press Writer
WEATHERFORD (AP) -
There are a few things to know
before, setting out to walk with
89-year-old Doris Haddock.
No. 1: Despite her age, severe
arthritis and her recent recovery
from emphysema, she keeps a
brisk pace. No. 2: She waits for
no one. No. 3: She walks with a
purpose.
Ms. Haddock, a soft-spoken, 5-
foot-tall woman known to those
around her as “Granny D”, is
nearly halfway through a 3,055-
mile trek designed to call atten-
tion to campaign-finance reform.
fornia on New Year’s Day and
expects to finish in Washington,
D.C., next January, walking six
days a week, 10 miles a day. This
week, she made her way down
U.S. Highway 180 in the Texas
summer heat.
Ms. Haddock said the cross-
country journey was her idea, but
she’s making the walk with the
backing of Common Cause, a
Washington-based interest group
that also advocates campaign-
finance reform.
The former secretary and shoe'
factory worker, whose only past
political activity was participating
in protests^ nuclear tests in the
from sadness about an electoral
system in which political offices
are, in effect, up for the highest
bid.
“Our system has broken down,”
she told a reporter while walking
along a hilly stretch of highway
in Weatherford, 30 miles west of
Fort Worth. “To run today, even
an honest man has to sell his soul
to the big corporations to com-
pete. And it’s getting worse all the
time.”
The Berlin, N.H., resident is
serious about taking her message
to Congress. That explains why
she has braved the Mojave Desert
— she was hospitalized four days
crossing — and tapped her bank
account for the trip.
She’s trying to avoid taking
money from Common Cause or
other groups and tries to save
cash by staying with people she
meets along the way.
“I don’t want to mortgage my
house for this, but I’m prepared
to if I have to do it,” she said.
“The mission is everything.”
So with her backpack canteen
strapped on and a big straw hat
shading her head, Granny D
walks on. Her son Jim and
daughter-in-law Libby trail her in
an old Dodge van that has a
makeshift bed in the back. It usu-
make the 10-mile hike each day,
including several 10-minute
breaks.
Several people, including Texas
Reform Party members carrying
huge Texas and U.S. flags, joined
the walk on this morning. There
also were two local TV crews,
and a production crew from
cable’s Discovery Channel chased
her with a large, fuzzy boom
microphone.
“I think it’s great that some
people want to take the country
back,” said Jerry Kershman, who
broke from mowing his grass
along the highway to greet
Granny D and offer her a few
would be the way they are if they
didn’t see all this corruption in
government.”
The growing entourage talks
with Ms. Haddock, but it is often
difficult to hear her over the rum-
ble of passing 18-wheelers. The
arthritis requires her to wear a
brace that causes her to walk
hunched over.
Ms. Haddock shakes off the
attention and stares ahead, more
concerned with her goal than the
evening news. <
She touts legislation written to
limit so-called soft money dona-
tions in federal campaigns that
died last September in the Senate.

NURSING HOME
. What is an Advance Directive?
| An advance directive provides nursing home staff, medical staff, and
relatives with information about what special, serious treatment the resident I
does and does not want in circumstances • such as a stroke or
coma • that would prevent the resident from telling the doctor |
how he or she wants to be treated.
The most common types of advance directives are a Living Will
and a Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare. Copies of |
these signed documents should be on file with the nursing facili-
ty, the resident's physician, and in the resident’s room. A Living I
Will ensures that if, at any time, the resident has an irreversible
Barbara Garrett condition and that death is imminent, his or her wishes will be
carried out. This simple document is meant to be easy to |
complete without the need for an attorney’s assistance.

MORTGAGE BROKER
i “What la a Mortgage Broker and how do they differ from other mortgage lenders?'
Mortgage Brokers do not lend money, but bring Imeston and home buyers together. Ihemort- I
gage broker has accees to muMpM Investors but works lor the home buyer, not the Investor.
When a home buyer obtains the services ot a broker, tlw broker takes the application and I
processes It.. collecting all the necessary forme, signatures and records, checking employ- [
mem, credit and title and obtaining the property appraisal. The broker then works with the |
. Investor who win provide the beet terms tor the home buyer.
So what eels one type ot mortgege lender apart from the others? Mortgage brokers I
are known tor their abHUy to work with tha borrowers... especially those with ape-
dt( circumstances... because they can shop the lending market to obtain the best I
and most cost-effective loan that will fit each borrower’s unique needs. Brokers do J
not have to keep each of their loans on a conforming bases as other lenders do, as
they use each investor’s guidelines or programs for a different borrower each time, |
therefore their flexibility is greater than the other lenders.
I When deciding ppon which lender to use, the type is not as important as the service |
r can offar. A lender who can offer prompt, courteous service and is able to
ir the loan for the borrower can make the home buying experience a little easier.

AUTOMOBILE SERVICE
■ How often should I have my vehicle eervlced? And what does a service Include?
Your car will need several types of service. In general there are: oil and filter change,
grease job, transmission service, differential eervlce, brake service, power steering
service, air conditioning A hosting eervlce, coolant service and basic maintenance
which includes checking hoses, baits, sir fillers, hydraulic lines, vacuum lines and all
flailH Uvala I
The main service most people talk about Is changing your oil and fil-
ter, and greasing ell grease fittings on the car. This should be done
every 3,000 miles, or on a time allotment of 90 to 120 days. At
O'Danltl's Garage we do the basic maintenance of checking hoses,
belts, air filters, hydraulic lines, vacuum lines and topping off all fluid
levels at that time (At no additional cost the customer). Transmission
services should bo performed once a year. You should never go over
25,000 miles between services of your transmission no matter what
type ol vehicle you drive. Any overdrive transmission or transmission
in a tow vehicle should never exceed 15,000 miles between services.
(Doing those services on a regular basis helps give a longer life of
these types of transmissions. The remaining services should be done
on about every 25,000 miles.)
Danny O'Daniel says, “The cheapest
for your vehicle Is the timely service,
and these services being
“The cheapest insurance that money can buy
timely service, quality oil, parts, filters, fluids,
g performed by a quality mechanic.”

- What is the status of the new (non R410A repbeing the present R-22
used in most air conditioning systems?
The Montreal Protocol calls tor reductions in the production ot HCFCs to
“afl“ Industries beginning the year 2004. R-22 refrigerant will be
available to put Into any new equipment up until the year 2010.
Productions of HCFC't for servicing existing equipment Is scheduled to |
end In 2020, with the total ben on HCFC production effective 2030.
Q: Suddenly, my hair feels and looks very dry. Why
and what can I do?
Robin Mitchell
Now, to dispel a few mvths.
iA
Claims have been made that R410A enables homeowners lo reduce their |
cooling costs by as much ae 60%. This may be true if the homeowner Is
changing out equipment that le older and far leee efficient than today'e I
equipment. However, R410A refrigerant, in and of itself, Is not a 60% ]
higher efficiency refrigerant than R-22. To the homeowner, a 14.0 SEER |
R22 unit le Just as efficient aa a 14. SEER R410A unit.
R410 la certainly going to be the wave ol the future in air conditioning.
! Summer is very harsh on our hair due to the sun, chlorine,
_and salt water. First, in order to remove any build
up use a clarifying shampoo like Joico’s Resolve
Shampoo. Follow with a Protein Reconstructor for
5 minutes and rinse. Joico’s K-Pak is especially
good. After that apply a deep penetrating moisturiz-
er for 5 minutes. Rinse. Your hair’s moisture will
then be restored. You can do this Hair Repair
System once a week. Also, be sure you are using
styling products with UV protectants to shield your
hair from harsh summer elements.
