Two local teachers honored by Exxon

Baytown teachers Pat Richard-
son and Nancy Webster were
imong the 38 teachers from five
-louston-area school districts to
eceive Exxon academic awards
n math/science' —- “Excellence
n Teaching Awards.”
Since 1990, the Exxon Acade-
me Awards program has hon-
ied more than 327 teachers. It
ecognizes teachers who provide
txemplary educational opportu-
lities and encourage students to
pursue careers in math, engi-
neering and science.
Each teacher received tecogni-
tion awards and $500 grants to
fund their favorite classroom
math or science projects.
Richardson, Ross S. Sterling
High School Science Depart-
ment chart and chemistry
teacher, plans to use her grant to
buy a computer for her class-
room.
In her 21st year of teaching,
she teaches Pre-AP and AP
(Advanced Placement) chem-
istry. She serves on the Vertical
Science Team to align junior and
senior high curricula. During the
1997-98 academic year, 100 per-
cent of her students taking the
AP test for college chemistry
received credit.
She has a bachelor’s degree in
chemistry from Baylor Universi-
ty, a master’s degree in analytical
chemistry from the University of
Houston-Clear Lake and a mas-
ter’s in science education, from
the University of Houston-Main
Campus.
She participated in the Exxon-
sponsored “Thinking Expedi-
tion” in Estes Park, Colo., in
June 1998, and conducted the
Exxon environmental workshop
in August 1998.
Webster, who is in her first
year of teaching chemistry and
physics at Robert E. Lee High
School, plans to use her grant to
buy lab equipment. She is an
Academic Decathlon team
coach.
A graduate of Louisiana State
University, she has a bachelor of
science degree in* bio-chemistry
and chemistry. She is working
on a master’s in curriculum
instruction and secondary sci-
ence education at the University
of Houston-Main Campus. At

and Technology conference, she
spoke on “Female Friendly
Physics.”
Teachers were nominated from
high schools in the Aldine, Fort
Bend, Goose Creek, North Forest
and Houston school districts for
their efforts to encourage acade-
mic excellence among minority
students. To date, Exxon has dis-
tributed grants totaling approxi-
mately $170,000.
