Alvarado seeks Barbers Hill school post
Tammy Alvarado has an-
nounced her candidacy for Posi-
tion 1 on the Barbers Hill school
board.
Employed by Houston Pre-
paratory Academy as the sixth,
seventh and eighth grade
teacher, she served the Goose
Creek district as a substitute
teacher for two years.
“In 1991, I sought your sup-
port for the opportunity to serve
you as a member of the board of
trustees, and your response was
overwhelming,” she said. “Even
though 1 was not elected, my in-
terest and concern for this dis-
trict still remain. Therefore! 1 re-
quest your support."
Ms. Alvarado said students
are the most valuable asset in
the district. “They are our future
and deserve the best we can
give,” she said. “They must be
challenged, allowed to be crea-
tive, and encouraged to become
independent thinkers, while be-
ing taught in an atmosphere that
is safe and reflects the basic
moral values of the community.
“I believe that this can effec-
tively be done by teachers who
are motivated, allowed to ex-
pand their knowledge and em-
powered to make the final deci-
sions on all educational ques-
tions which involve their
classroom, provided these deci-
sions fall within the state and
district guidelines," she added.
She said that while it is not
always necessary for each board
member to agree, it is necessary
for the board as a whole to sup- L
port those decisions made by a
majority vote of the board.
She believes a board member
represents the taxpayers of the
community, and each individual
vote should reflect the concerns
of those taxpayers.
“Therefore, I will cast my
vote on major issues of concern
after I obtain .-substantial input

from the community and teach-
ers,” she added.
“My telephone number will
be published, and my hospitality
will be extended to anyone with
concerns about the school
district.”

Ferguson running
for BH trustee post
Ed Ferguson ha$
announced his candidacy for
Position One on the Barbers
Hill school board. Employed
for 17 years by Exxon, he is
currently a process supervi-
sor.
“I have a vested interest in
the students educated at Bar-
bers Hill,” Ferguson said. “I
am a parent of two Barters
Hill students. I will be wodc-
ing with some of these stu-
dents in the future; I w|ll
probably be working for
some of these students. I need
for them to be the best they
can be.”
Ferpson said he believes
the school system must be
run on the same principles
used by successful busines-
ses. “We must utilize the raw
materials, which are the stu-
dents, and process them into
a marketable product,” he
said. “They must leave high
school with the background
and education that will make
them ready for colleges, uni-
versities and 'vocational
training.
“The school must make a
‘profit’ that shows a good
return on capital investment.
The ‘profit’ is the ability of
the students to proceed with
their education on whatever
level they choose.”
Ferguson said that to ask
taxpayers for their support
the board must turn out stu-
dents prepared for their
future. SAT scores must be
high enough for them to gain
admission to their chosen
universities, he said, and voc-
ational training must be good
enough to allow them to
excel in their chosen field.
“We must continue to
update our curriculum to
allow students to choose
between college preparatory
or vocational technical
fields,” he said. “We must
continue to have parent vol-

unteers in the schools.
“We must be prepared for
some tough decisions in the
future. The state of funding
for education in Texas in
uncertain; we will have to
decide between need and
want. We will have to care-
fully evaluate our personnel
and administrative needs and
utilize every method avail-
able to make them the best
they can be. We may want to
unite with industry to request
to be a part of the special
personnel development train-
ing schools they offer their
employees.
“We will have many new
challenges in the future, and
to face them successfully we
will have to meet the issues
head on. A Harris Poll reve-
aled that 77 percent of the
people surveyed favored
increased government spend-
ing to improve public educa-
tion.
“The message is clear that *
we need more emphasis on
basic education to prepare
our students for tomorrow. I
am ready for the challenge of
providing that education for
our students.”
