Obituaries
Arneda Thomas
Johnson
Arneda Thomas Johnson, 48,
passed away Saturday, July 15,
2000, in a local hospital. She was
born to the late Charles Grisby
Sr., and Elsie Mae Thomas Bland
* on August 7, 1951 in Anahuac.
She attended Barbers Hill High
School and continued her educa-
tion at Lee College in nursing.
She was baptized at an early age,
and later joined Mt. Zion Baptist
Church where she sang in the
choir. She was united in matrimo-
ny to Frankie Johnson of Mont
Belvieu and to them were born
seven children.
Preceding her in death were
two daughters, Ursula and
Stephanie Johnson; her father,
Charles Grisby; her brother,
Booker Tee Bland; and her
grandmother, Gertie Blackwell.
Left to cherish her memories
are her husband of 31 years,
Frankie Johnson; one daughter,
Bridgett L. Johnson; sons, Dwon,
Isaac, Cortez and Cory Johnson,
all of Baytown; six sisters, Janet
Mayes, Ethel Wilson, Mary
Booth, Beverly Ford, and Tammy
Griffin, all of Baytown, and Ura-
nia Bland of Houston; five broth-
ers, Charles G. Thomas and Tim-
othy Bland, both of Houston,
Leo Bland and Robert Bland,
both of Baytown, and Micheal
Bland of Hankamer.; 11 grand-
children; one aunt, Ida Haskin of
Hankamer; mother-in-law, Bessie
Johnson of Baytown; three broth-
ers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; and
a host of relatives, nieces,
nephews and friends.
Visitation will be held from 7
to 9 p.m. Friday July 21,2000.
Funeral services will be held
Saturday July 22,2000 at 11a.m.
Both services will be at Robey
Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor
Murice Johnson officiating.

Mida Zonelle Cornett
Mida Zonelle Cornett, 73, of
Lake Murvaul, passed away Sun-
day, July 16, 2000, at Briarcliff
Nursing Home in Carthage,
Texas.
Zonelle Cornett, a native of La
Pryor, Texas, and recent resident
of Carthage, was bom September
25, 1926 to William David and
Inez Elizabeth Busby Cornett.
She grew up in La Pryor and was
baptized and confirmed in the La
Pryor Methodist Church. She
attended grade school through
'high school in the La Pryor Inde-
pendent School District where
she graduated in 1943. She then
attended Southwest Texas State
Teachers College in San Marcos
where she received her B.S.
degree in 1948. She later received
an M.S. from Texas Women's
University.
“Zo” served as a teacher in sev-
eral school districts around Texas
and retired after 39 years in 1987
from Barber's Hill Independent
School District. Through the
years she coached girls basket-
ball, track, tennis and volleyball.
Although she considered all of
her teams to be successful, she
took several to compete in the
Texas U.I.L. State championship
playoffs. She also spent many
summers at Heart O’ The Hills
Girls Camp in Hunt, Texas,
where she served as camp coun-
selor, Assistant Director and
finally Director of the camp.
Zo is preceded in death by her
parents; and a brother, Charles
Roy Cornett.
She is survived by a sister-in-
law; Laura Cornett of Missouri
City; nieces and nephews, Brenda
and Fred Lowery of Missouri
City, Dana and Bill Cramer of
Brenham and Sara and Charlie
Cornett of Missouri City; great-
nieces and nephews, Matthew,
Charles and Katie Lowery, Jana
and Leah Cramer and Courtney
and Justin Cornett; special confi-
dants, Julianne Johnston and
Charlene Kagler; special friends,
Dr. A.Y. and Jane Sturdivant and
many other dear friends.
Visitation was held Tuesday,
July 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Estes-
Knowles Mortuary in Uvalde.
Services were held Wednesday,
July 19, 2000, at 10 a.m. at La
Pryor United Methodist Church.
Interment was held at La Pryor
Cemetery.
Services were under the direc-
tion of Estes-Knowles Mortuary
in Uvalde. Local arrangements
are under the direction of
Hawthorn Funeral Home.
Family request donations be
made to: La Pryor United
Methodist Church.
Grace Mildred
Maxwell
Grace Mildred Maxwell, 74, of
Brookeland, passed away
Wednesday July 19, 2000, at her
residence.
A former 50-year resident of
Highlands, she lived in Brpoke-
land for 10 years.
She is survived by her husband,
Calvin Maxwell of Brookeland;
daughters, Deana Powell of Dal-
las and Marilyn Kluch and hus-
band Buddy of Barbers Hill; two
sons, Arthur Maxwell of Brooke-
land and Robert Maxwell and
wife Dennis of Baytown; one sis-
ter, Jackie Pickle of Jasper; three
grandchildren, Melanie Kluch,
Shelbi Scwarz and Stephen Davis
along with numerous nieces,
nephews and friends.
Visitation will be held today,
July 20, 2000, from 3 to 8 p.m. at
Forest Oaks Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held
Friday July 21,2000, at 10 a.m. at
Forest Oaks Funeral Home in
Jasper with burial to follow in
Brookeland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family has
asked that Memorial Contribu-
tions be made to Lakes Area Hos-
pice, P.O. Box 2086, Jasper, TX
75951 or to Brookeland Cemetery

Savio Israel Coronado
Savio Israel Coronado, new-
born, beloved son of Juan Angel
Coronado and Rebekah Jane
Daniel-Coronado, passed away
Monday, July 17, 2000 at St.
Lukes Episcopal Hospital in
Houston.
He is survived by his parents;
grandparents, Juan and Mireya
Coronado and Glenda Daniel;
aunts, Shiloh Daniel of Austin,
Erin Daniel of Huntsville,
Melanie Daniel of Baytown,
Misty Daniel and Francis Corona-
do of Baytown; uncles, A1 Daniel
of Austin, Jacob Daniel of Bay-
town, Victor and Eric Coronado
of Baytown; great-grandmothers,
Dewrene Lawson of La Porte and
„Elia Garza of Baytown.
Services will be held at 3 p.m.
Friday, July 21, 2000, at Memory
Gardens Chapel, 8624 Garth Rd,
Baytown. Burial will follow at
Earthman Memory Gardens
Cemetery, 8624 Garth Rd. Bay-

Clifford Leland Oswell
Clifford Leland Oswell, 87, of
Jasper, passed away Wednesday,
July 19,2000.
He was a native of MUlerton,
Okla., a former resident of Bay-
town and had lived in Jasper since
1959. He was a member of the
Dewitt Clinton Lodge No. 29 AF
& AM of Jasper. He was owner
and operator of Oswell Service
Station in Oklahoma, owner and
operator of Oswell Cabinet Shop
in Baytown, owner of Oswell
Apartments in Jasper for several
years, and a general contractor in
Baytown and Jasper.
He is survived by his wife,
Pearl Oswell of Jasper; daughters,
Elouise Foster of Roganville,
Marchita Priest of Rosenberg,
Bennie Whitton of Jasper; nine
grandchildren; 17 great-grand-
children and one great-great-
grandchild also survive.
Funeral services will be at 2
p.m. today, July 20, 2000, at First
United Methodist Church of
Jasper, with Masonic graveside
services to follow in Evergreen
Cemetery in Jasper.
Services are under the direction
of Stringer & Griffin Funeral
Home of Jasper.
Memorials may be made to
First United Methodist Church of
Jasper or to the Jasper Public
Library.
Lois Johnson Cowan
Lois Johnson Cowan, of Mont-
gomery, Texas, died Sunday, July
16 in Memorial Hermann Hospi-
tal-The Woodlands.
Lois was bom in Odell, Texas,
to Herman Levy and Ola Poole
Johnson.
She graduated from Chillicothe
High School in 1941 and moved
to Houston shortly thereafter. She
was married to John P. “Jack”
Cowan in 1948. The couple made
their home in Houston for many
years. At various times, they
maintained homes in Rockport,
Texas and Elizabethton, Ten-
nessee. In 1985, they moved to
April Sound on Lake Conroe in
Montgomery, Texas.
She is survived by her husband
and three children: Kitty Cowan
Allen and her husband, Joe, of
Baytown; Jane Cowan of Houston
and John P. Cowan, Jr., of Bristol,
Tennessee. Six grandchildren also
survive: Sydney Allen Seaman of
Humble, Sara Meridith Allen of
Austin, Mary Katharine Allen of
Austin, Evan Cowan Sermas of
Houston, Stephanie Elaine Ser-
mas of Houston and John Mar-
shall Cowan of Bristol, Virginia.
Surviving siblings include her
brothers, A. Keith Johnson of La
Porte, Texas and John C. Johnson
of Montgomery, Texas, and a sis-
ter, Donna Johnson, also of Mont-
gomery. She is. also survived by
Marti Morenings Cowan of Bris-
tol, Virginia and Dr. Chris Sermas
of Houston and numerous nieces,
nephews and cousins.
Memorial services will be held
at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 20, at
Cashner Funeral Home, 801 Teas
Road, Conroe, Texas 77305, with
the Rev. G. Richard Wheatcroft
officiating.
At her request, memorials may
be made to the American Lung
Association, Houston & Southeast
Region, 2425 West Loop South,
Suite 330, Houston, Texas 77227.
Her family wishes to express
appreciation to the caring, profes-
sional nursing staff of Memorial
Herman Hospital-The Woodlands,
