Louisiana Arcadian influence in Herring
residence in West Chambers County
j By Melissa Harmon
[ of The Baytown Sun
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Herring on
I Cotton Lake in West Chambers County reflects a
• Louisiana Arcadian heritage with white wood,
green roof and trim and a wide veranda.
Designed and decorated by the couple, the home
will be on the Bay Area Heritage Society tour
kitchen cabinets have glass doors that reveal blue
china in the cabinets. The Herrings had the
kitchen counter tops built up high to their
specifications because they are both tall.
A unique feature in the kitchen is an island with
see-through candy bins. This is a variation of a
feature they had seen in a home they toured.
The living room, on the back side of the house,
is decorated in blues and maroons. The fireplace is
set off with arched, inset shelves.
Mrs. Herring designed the utility room in the
center of the house for easier access. She thought
this was logical because there is laundry coming
from all rooms of the house.
In the master bedroom the Herrings have a
cheny wood rice bed. The bed posts have grains
of rice and tobacco leaves carved into the wood. A
large, antique armoire made in the early 1800s in
England is one of the greatest antique pieces in the
home and sits in the master bedroom. Mrs.
Herring coordinated colors in the master bedroom
and master bathroom.
There are two rooms upstairs, one is a feminine
and the other is masculine. The feminine room is
decorated using pinks, yellows and blues. The
masculine room has green and burgundy decora-
tions and is decorated with an outdoors theme
including a duck phone that quacks instead of
rings.
A large bathroom separates the two rooms and
includes an antique bathtub with old brass faucets.
The home is smartly designed and decorated
and each room should be examined carefully to
view all the unique features the Herrings have
included in their home.

complement the decoration and design of that
