The Shaq’ goes pro
in order to have fun
By Kelley Shannon
of The Associated Press
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — All-
American center Shaquille
O’Neal said Friday he’s had as
much fun as he can in college
basketball and plans to leave
Louisiana State to enter the
NBA draft.
With his family at his side,
O’Neal, 20, announced he
would forego his senior year of
eligibility at LSU.
“I feel that in my heart it’s
time for a change and it’s time
for me to move on,” O’Neal
said. "I think the experience was
very much needed, but now I’m
ready to take what I have
learned on with me to the
NBA.”
He said he will resign from
LSU next week, but intends to
pursue his business administra-
tion degree during his off-
seasons.
O’Neal revealed his plans in a
news conference at Fort Sam
Houston, the Army post where
his father is stationed. He said
he made the decision Sunday af-
ter talking it over with his fam-
ily and LSU coach Dale Brown.
A few weeks ago, Brown re-
portedly advised O’Neal to turn
pro because of what Brown per-
ceived as the undue pounding
O’Neal received from opposing
teams, which often triple-team
him. But Blown said he re-
mained neutral during Sunday’s
meeting with O’Neal.
O’Neal said triple- and
be the first rookie to earn $5
million or more per season.
“I don’t really think about it.
I’m just going to wait arid see
what happens,” O’Neal said. He
said he would wait until next
week to say who his agent will
be.
O’Neal said he has high ex-
pectations for his NBA career,
althoufh at first he expects it to
be a learning experience.
“If I don’t dominate my first
year, in my latter part of the
NBA I will be a force to be re-
ckoned with,” he said. “I’m just
going to go in and take filings
slow and whatever happens,
happens.”
O’Neal also said he would

O’Neal stressed his plans to
complete his education at LSU.
“I’m still a strong believer in
a college education,” he said. “I
know you all are probably sit-
ting out there saying, ‘That’s
what they all say.’ But I’d like
to consider myself as not like
the others who have said this. I
will continue my education."
His father, SgL Philip Harri-
son,«said he supports his son’s
decision.

k la
quadruple-teaming often pre-
vented him from showing all his
basketball talent, but he said that
wasn’t the main reason for his
decision to turn pro.
“I’m not making this decision
out of anger or frustration, but
everyone who saw the SEC
tournament, they know that an
injustice was done,” O’Neal
said. “The main factor was if I
go back to school next year, will
I have fun? And this year, I
didn’t have that much fan.
“It’s a sad moment for me be-
cause we stressed education in
our family. Shaquille had to do
what he had to do,” Harrison
said. “He made the right deci-
sion, and whatever decision he’s
made, we’re going to stick be-
hind him 100 percent.”
Kent Lowe, associate sports
information director at LSU,
said the school wishes O’Neal
well and is glad he plans to
pursue his degree, whether at
LSU or elsewhere.

SIDING STRATEGY
Aluminum house siding may carry a guarantee that it will not need
painting, but that does not mean it will not oxidize. The -paint film may
remain intact, but the color looks dull and lifeless. To combat this problem,
try-treating oxidized aluminum siding with products used to clean outdoor
decks. (Make sure that the product label sa
decks. (Make sure that the product label says that it is recommended for
cleaning^prefinished metal sidingj^o ensure arreven application of the
the label. This chore is more easily accomplished with two pails and two
sponges. As soon as an area is covered with cleaningaolutionfrom thefirst
pail, rinse it with water and a sponge from the^second.
See the hardware professionals at EASTHAM HARDWARE & HOME
CENTER for cleaners, paints and stains to give your home that "like new
again" look, no matter what kind of siding you have. And. while you're here,
take a took at our complete electrical ana plumbing departments. You'll find
everything you could ever need right here under one roof. Come see us k
